I bought a rock with some mushroom coral, zoo's and yellow polyps, I'm not sure of the specifics of any of them. But I've had them for probably a month, and already 1 of the bigger mushrooms came off and floated away.It stretched its "stem" out during the night, until it was about 2 or 3 inches long and very thin, and then in the morning it was sitting in the opposite end of the tank, completely disconnected? I'm assuming this is a bad thing? Will the now unattached mushroom reattach to another rock and grow there? Are the zoo's and polyp's stinging the mushroom until it decides to leave? Here's a pic...

Assuming it's relatively healthy, the loose mushroom can be re-attached and will do fine. Super glue gel, some nylon mesh, or even skewering it on a toothpick will work.

The mushroom on the right looks like it might be getting stung. Zoanthids are also known for putting out toxic compounds. I have never seen mushrooms "escape" in this way, but mine have "walked" to places they like better, leaving trails of little shroooms along the way. A search may turn up something.

Thanks Dave, I'll try sticking the "free" mushroom onto another rock, and I'll see how it turns out. The big mushroom in the pic is actually the one that broke off ,that pic is a little older.

mine do it all the time in my nano. i simply pick them up, and place them on a part of the rock in lower current. they seem to attach fairly fast and do fine
