My 180 Gallon idea

that website is pretty good, the synodontis petricola is only $10 and that is acceptable. (still expensive compared to CLs though) I'll probably buy 10 synos, maybe. I prefer to keep fish in large groups, they are happier and that'l how they look live the wild. How fast is the shipping? Do you think it is going to be expensive since I live in Toronto?

I also saw some cynotilapia afra, cobue and jalo reef. I think I want some. I need more colours and species in the tank. I have a hard time trying to justify buying a 180 G to my family if all I'm adding is pretty much 1 species (demasoni) its not like the syno or plecos can be seen that often anyway. Maybe a trio of haps 1m/2f?

Pretty much everyone has told me to stay away from the Clowns so i probably will, their ick problem is pretty scary.

I've also decided on buying 2 fluval fx5 on ebay for $200ea, thats a pretty good deal. I'll put one on each corner and may use the 2217, or leave it on the 55G for growout, who knows. I mainly chose the FX5 because it pushes alot of water, so I don't have to buy powerheads.

I have no where to put my RTBS and hes currently living with my mbunas, he'll move with the guys. I like the BN plecs because I know they breed easily (i love fry) and they eat algae, perfect. As long as they don't go missing eyeballs.

That's a pretty website, indeed! The order will arrive home on the next day after shipped. You leave a message on that website with the fishes you want and Eddie Martin will answer you with all the order's details and when it will be shipped and arriving at your home. I bought him 28 juvie mbunas and the shipping to Puerto Rico was around $78. I think Toronto is not that far away from Kentucky and maybe you want fewer fishes than mine which may mean less money, I hope. Just contact Eddie, he is a great guy! :thm:

You'll be gleefully surprised at how active syno. petricolas are.

as for the multi's a decorus. not so much.

another beautiful catfish fish is the syno. angelicus but again seems to be shy.

Hey guys, I've been thinking of the tank and one issue is lighting. It would be alot cheaper to get a tank and a stand only, can I just get some shop lights from home depot or something and hang it? I mean any light will work right? Its not a planted tank that we are talking about.

I have several tanks with just shop lighting and they suit my needs.

:iagree: Ditto. Use shop lighting as well without problems, especially if you're not gonna have plants.

Thats good to hear, shoplight is it! Did you guys hang it from the ceiling or what? I plan to keep it in my diining room, parallel to a 6 ft marbled dining table. If I already have chandeliers hanging, I think hanging shoplights beside it would look awkard.

(I've been thinking about the clowns aswell, is it THAT bad to live in a 180G with ACs? 90% of them don't live very long, theres probably 1 guy in 100 who will provide proper tank requirements for them, and a large tank...what do you think? still no?)

Hey buddy Wyom said it best man its your tank do what you want if you want to try clowns than go for it but in the end dont be surprised of the ich problem, who knows you might not even experience the problem..

Yep just email eddie or call him his number is on the website as well crap i call him all of the time, well he didnt return my phone call over the holidays but thats expected this time of the year plus knowing eddie he is probably on a fish collecting trip somewhere out of the country i so need to do that with him well if he would let me go with him and his crew..

But yep if you call him he can hook you up on shipping prices and give you options, we were talking the other day where some body ordered a crap load of cichlids and opted out for 2 to 3 day shipping and he tried to explain but you know how that goes man..

As for lighting yes you can use shop lights either hanging (best option) or just laying on the lid, just make sure you tap into a stud in your ceiling if you go with hanging..

I have a 150 gallon African tank with labs, venustus, jalo reef, elongatus, and albino compressiceps. I had 7 clown loaches. I never ever had a problem with the cichlids messing with the loaches, but I found that the amount of medication needed to cure the loaches of ich would stress out my cichlids so bad that it nearly killed them.

I had better luck keeping clown loaches in a smaller tank honestly. I kept 3 in a 75 gallon with African's for about 4 years and never had a problem.

Additionally, you might want to check into Synodontis Eupterus (sp?). I have 4 of those in my 150, and they are amazing bottom feeders. They have the appetite of a cichlid, and surely do clean up everything left over by those messy eaters.

I hope this helps, and good luck with your tank!
