My 240g tank journal

New Filter Boxes
After getting the much larger Sequence Dart pump I was really thinking my filter boxes were going to be too small. And also since they were plumbed into the QO pumps with much smaller plumbing I'd have to re-do them anyhow. But that’s OK, I'll set them aside for a future smaller tank that might use the 4000's.

I debated different sizes and shapes and ultimately decided on a similar box but one just slightly not as long and a little deeper. I am going to vertically orient them and put two back to back in each sump. So there will be 4 of them to spread the flow across. So basically the same design as before, but twice as many of them:

I cut the top out with a dremel and spiral saw bit.

I liked these boxes since they had a real deep lip around the lid that would help seal between the floss and lid.

Marking where I need to cut out for the plumbing.

Cut it out with a hole saw bit in my hand drill.

After gluing the endcap on, I started drilling holes with my drill press into the end which will be inside the filter. This was then cut with a little bit of pipe sticking out and fed through the hole in the box (from the inside) and secured by placing a coupling on the outside part.

More potsrubbies. These boxes hold 1/3 more scrubbers, plus there are two more boxes now.

These boxes weren’t quite as square as the others, took a lot of trimming to get the eggcrate to fit right.

Floss cut to fit top. I also made a simple template the shape I need out of cardboard so I can cut them out easier next time. Sorry blurry pic.

Completed filter box.

One box installed. They are just press-fit into the wye, hopefully that will suffice. You can also see the co2 line I run through a small hole in the cap of the wye.

Two boxes installed per each sump.

Another view of the filter boxes installed in the sump tank.

I think I am finally done with gosh darn plumbing!!! This better work! lol.

Thats a nice setup. How high is the water level in the sump going to be when everything is running? I looks like the top 1/2 or 1/3 of the filter boxes will be out of the water.

Thanks all!

Sploke - yeah they stick up slightly... these boxes were slightly shorter than the first ones I tried but still stick up just a little. The water level I am still figuring out... At 3" down from the top I get ~15g capacity for back flow when power goes out. I've got to do another test to get an exact amount of gallons will backflow if the check valves failed... just with the overlfows draining thats only a few gallons, but if the checkvalves fail the main tank will drain to my siphon break holes that are about 1-1.5" under the waterline (about 10g per inch).

At about 3" down there is maybe 1" of air in the top of the boxes, which is fine. I didnt get quite enough potscrubbers to fill all the boxes (bought all they had) so the small air gap at the top doesnt matter much anyhow. I will probably get a few more to pack em in tight though, that way there will be less bypass since when they are loose and floating around there is probably a lot of water going between them. No big deal though, hopefully when its fully planted there wont be much demand for bio filtration.

Why have the syphon breaks so low? Mine are at or just above the water level, close enough that they create ripples. I have a 40breeder tank for my sump running about 250gal of water (and another 150gal to be added soon), and I get maybe 5gal of backflow with no check valves. Although, I['m using a w/d so I keep the water level at about 2" anyway so it wouldn't be an issue either way.

I have the siphon break holes slightly under the water line so for one they are quiet (no splashing) and for co2 since I want to avoid unnecessary surface agitation. But the amount of agitation from two small holes probably isnt much compared to the overflows (set at about 1-2" drop) so I dont know if thats really important. I still think I'd leave a couple inches in the sumps anyhow, so one or two extra inches isnt a big deal. Will help cut down on splashes and such from taking out the filter to clean or something like that. And I hope the checkvalves never fail but I make sure to cover that as a liability and set the sump level appropriatly.
