My 40 gallon Tanganyika set up

This tank is 36" long, 18" deep, 13" tall. I guess it's technically a 35 gallon breeder.
I might take the brichardis back to the store and ask for trade credit for more julidochromis. How many would you suggest?
What snails would anyone suggest in this setup if I can't get my hands Tanganyikan species? I still think it'd be great if I could get a sponge growing in there...

Malaysian Trumpet Snails will no doubt end up in there eventually on their own, especially if you add some plants. I don't see them in the main tank anymore but they survive in my sump. Free food. I agree a freshwater sponge would be awesome but I just haven't heard of them in the hobby yet. I've googled them befrore and it's difficult to even find info on them.
Julis are tricky; often even mated pairs don't tolerate each other well. I'd start with a group and see if you can't get a pair that way. Any extras will probably be harassed.

Get rid of the brichardi. Once you put some in a tank, you can pretty much kiss that tank goodbye. Julies can be nasty too, sometimes even killing their partner. Think about adding some calvus, and then some shellies. That could be a beautiful tank with a lot more activity.
