What does the tap water smell like, using carbon may help, what kind of filtration do you have, and is the media cleaned on a regular basis.....

The water smells like rotten eggs. I use a Rena XP3 canister filter. I clean the media once a month and do weekly water changes.What does the tap water smell like, using carbon may help, what kind of filtration do you have, and is the media cleaned on a regular basis.....
carbon removes odours and chemicals from the water its very helpful thing to use that pleco will also outgrow that tank, just a heads up

but its obviously stated she/he doesnt vac.... or stir sand... problem solved...needs to do maintance better to get rid of the smell...

I had sand in my crab tank and just a fair warning I stirred it twice a week and vacuumed once a week because it was purely just asthetics and for crab comfort... It will eventually always turn that nasty dark colour and smell like rotten eggs.. I couldnt find anyway to stop it fromd oing that.. Only thing that cured the smell was changing some of the sand out every few months.. I kept 3+++ inches and changes 1 inch every so often.. worked for me.
What type of cichlids are they? My mbuna are always moving around sand to the point I rarely have to stir it. I'm not sure if the sand is your only problem, especially if your cichlids are diggers like most are. I also keep malaysian trumpet snails in my tank. They bury through the sand and help keep it from gathering gas pockets. I got mine free from petsmart. I would also try the carbon idea, could it be part of your decore? Good luck
I got a new gravel vac that allows me to vac the sand in much the same was as i would if it were gravel, its got a longer vac pipe and so far i have not lost loads of sand. i do like the new vac. Do your stir your sand ? could be gas. But i find activated carbon does work a treat.
