Where the ducks walk on the fish, PA
Just snapped a couple of pics of my Mpimbwe babies. They are all between 1 and 1 1/2". They are in their temporary home until our house renovations are done in January. Then they will go into another 125 gal with sand and rocks. The other tank canopy does not have lights but I have a 48" 40w light and a 48" actinic light to put in there. That will give light in the middle but shadows on the ends. Will that be good for lighting for these guys as they grow? I know the lights on the tank they are in now are too much as they are VHO and 180w.

I am feeding them 3 times a day (brine shrimp flakes, spirolina flakes w/ garlic and papricka, and golden pearls, all from kensfish.

Tell me what you think.

Hey snoopy,

Congrats, they are showing nice colors!

I think you may be over feeding them. Only feed once per day (this is important). As they get a little bigger, I would start skipping a day of feeding once in a while. With my adult frontosa, I feed once every three days (skipping two days in between feedings). The only time I alter that regimine is when I have tubes down. Right now, I have three females with tubes down and one that may be spawning right now. So, I have been feeding every day for the past few days. Once she lays the eggs, the tank will go on a five day fast until I strip the eggs.

Keep the pics coming.

Ok, once a day. Which food? Or do I alternate? I have so much to learn about these guys. They are soooo different than my discus that I have had to feed 6 times a day.

Bye the way congrats on the spawn!

Hey snoopy,

I feed my fry, that are the size of yours, a good sinking pellet (1mm in size). That is all you really need. I am patial to NLS. Once in a blue moon you can give them a treat of some spirulina. Frozen mysis is a good treat too. Some feed FD krill as a treat. If you do that, they will love it, but make sure you break it up and let it soak in tank water until it is soft.

I fed my Kaps frozen mysis this morning - I do that when a female has a tube down as that is supposed to stimulate spawning. Not sure if it really works but many of my experienced frontosa friends recommend it for that purpose and so, I do it too. At the very least, they enjoy the treat.

Hope that helps.

Thanks, it sure does. I am so excited that these ones made it and seem to be doing well. I think that I will stick with these 5 until they are a bit larger and see if I can figure out male/female. Then separate the male or males from the female or females as they came from the same parents. I will then try to find more for each tank of the opposite sex. If that makes sense.

Those are gorgeous!!! Just beautiful color on those fins.

Thanks Mel. They should get more and more color as they get bigger. I have read that fronts are somewhat shy, but these little guys come racing to me when I come near the tank, wanting food!

Beautiful.
