my bearded dragon!

Im not worried in the least. many, many people keep beardies without covers. as a general rule, adult beardies are too bulky to get out of a tank. any areas that he could get out are covered up with screening or a light.

yes, sid is definetly too lazy to try getting out now that hes in brumation, though I would much prefer he was awake and eating like a champ like he is the rest of the year. I must say, waking up a giant lizard every few days to eat and then having to catch 20 crix after he only eats three is not fun at all.

You should not feed during burmation! just let them sleep. You could get rotting food in the tummy and make him sick! My beardie, Yavie sleeps for around 4 months during her burmation without a single meal.

You guys, if you keep your dragons warm enough they should NOT be going into brumation! This is something they rarely do in the wild and only during freak cold snaps. Keep them warm and they will be active and eating normally all year long.

Actually, IMO burmation is perfectly normal and helps with overall health. Even with lights on, Yavie has always gone into burmation every November in the 5 years that she's been with me, regardless of the temp and lighting, she becomes less interested in foods and lays in her cave. If she's so gun-ho about it, why change anything. Many bearded dragon keepers see no problems with burmation as long as precuations are taken to prevent food rot.

I'm quite familiar with burmation but it's really only necessary if you want to breed them. Of course they will still breed in most cases without burmation and it can be done by just shortening the lighting cycle as opposed to lowering the heat source. If you're giving them the proper basking temps their is no reason they should do this. I know quite a few bearded dragon breeders and none of them encourage burmation to the point that they are in it for months at a time.

Well V_F, I'm not going to hijack someone's thread to have a discussion about this. Burmation has worked for me and that's all that matters to me.

Hey that's fine with me, but it shouldn't be what matters to you, it should be what matters for the health of your lizard. And if you think I'm trying to start something I'm not. My question is what's the point of putting your lizard through 4 months of unecessary burmation?

sid isnt in ocmplete brumation, hes in partial brumation. actually, he's been coming out of it, and isnt sleeping anymore.

his temps were the same as they always were, so it wasnt a drop in temperature that caused it. I asked on the bearded dragon forum I belong to (beardeddragons.com) and the answers were that pretty much everyone's mature dragons (1+ years) brumated.

anyways, I have to take some updated pictures, and find the thing to upload them, but I can post some of the old pics again
baby pictures (he's in a 2.5g tank for scale)
