My Beta fish seems to be dying. He's just swimming on his side and slipping in and out of consiousness. He was fine this morning, ate all his food, and was happily swimming around. I'd say this one beta in particular is almost 3 years old. Anyway, I just walked in the door, and I noticed him barely moving and laying on his side. Upon a closer look, it seems like his face turned brown (it was once a dark red). The brownish color seemed to also spread across his body, and it's pretty evident that he is dying. Before I euthenize him (with clove oil and vodka) I was wondering if any one knew what could have possibly caused this problem. I've never this problem with my Beta's before. What could have happened??

Sounds like it could be velvet... If you put him in the light and look along his body, does it look slighly fuzzy? If so, it is velvet... Common in Bettas, and not that hard to cure if you catch it quick... Do a 100 percent water change and treat with Maracide. Follow the directions and do a "blackout on the tank".. Velvet is an odd little creature, sort of half animal half vegetable... It needs the light to flourish, so a black out is helpful in ridding him of it... Bleach any buckets or nets that come into contact as it is really contagious.
Yup....he sure does look fuzzy! So this is cureable? I don't have to euthenize him? Hopefully he'll be alive in the morning so I can get some of that stuff. He also looks kind of bloated. Almost like Malawi bloat or something. his stomach is really big. I know I'm not overfeeding him. Is that a symptom of velvet too?
