My betta looks depressed

if you can get your hands on some prozac, just crush up a couple pills into powder and sprinkle them into the tank. now, when he starts feeling better, don't stop! treatment must be continuous to be successful.
Just in case there are any newbies reading this, the above post is a joke. DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME KIDS!

Is the temp OK? Not too hot/cold? 75-80 degrees?

Maybe try showing him a mirror for a few minutes. Perhaps seeing a "competitor" might perk him up...

I would definitely try moving him from view of the other tank. I have two bettas and one who's tank was in plain view of my community tank wasn't as energetic or "happy" as the one in my bedroom. I moved his tank because I had to make room for my Christmas tree, he is now on his own in my dining room. I have noticed a HUGE improvement in his energy level...or just an increase in "happiness". He hasn't stopped exploring his tank. I would try this first, as it's a pretty simple solution. Good luck!

Edit: I thought I'd also mention: I never really saw him flare, but now if I put my face near the tank, he swims right up to me and struts and flares. Quite cute I must say!
