My Betta's Tank: Phase One...

Thanks!! ^__^ I'll eventually replace the blue bradded folder tucked behind the tank with either an actual dark blue background or this other ide I had... >.>

Looks great! I really like the red leaf plant - nice variation. BTW I got my Gary at the beginning of the week and he hasn't touched my plants. I bought a veggie clip with a suction cup and I stick a slice of cucumber or lettuce in it for him and he eats that. My betta, Seven, is very interested in watching Gary. Its amusing to see. I'll be interested to see your tank come along. I'd like a moss ball too - pretty.

The reideckii or ludwigia or whatever is wilting and turning bright green.... I think I'm gonna lose it. : /

That sucks.

Red leafed plants need quite intense lighting. Everytime I plant them they are great for the first few weeks and then slowly die off.

The Anubias will probably get a bit of algae growth on its leaves as it is quite a slow growing plant. It seems to do particularly well in the shade from my experience so your idea of putting something above it to provide some algae reducing shade is a good idea!

I've found that crypts tend to overrun the area around them with their root system. I was surprised to find an extensive root system when I had to reestablish my tank. The good thing is they are easy to grow.

What are you fertilizing your plants with? I'd suggest investing in some good quality stuff. You'll certainly notice the difference and it will help the plants produce more off shoots.

Keep up the maintenance and the good work and you'll definitely be rewarded with a beautiful looking tank!

Yeah... eventually, I'll buy a stronger bulb and try this plant again someday if this batch dies off soon. For now, I have some nice simple java fern (two varieties), hygro, crypt undulata, and flame moss coming in.

The red plant definitely looks more like Alternanthera reineckii to me too. Doesn't look like even emersed Ludwigia. :) It needs high light (alot more than you've got, I'm afraid) and will grow tall and can grow pretty wide (the leaves) in the correct lighting. I've found that in medium light the leaves get quite stunted, so I imagine it wouldn't thrive well in low light.

Yours looks alot like this version of Alternanthera: http://www.aquaticplantcentral.com/forumapc/plantfinder/details.php?id=208&category=genus&spec=Alternanthera which has a green color on the top of the leaves. The gold color could be the emersed form.

The tank looks good! I really like your drawing of what you want the tank to look like. :)

Shame it won't look like the picture until I get better lighting, though.

Oh well... you live and you learn. Can't complain about losing something that was given for free now can I? :dance2:

A very nice set up for a small tank. It will look lovely once the plants start comming in. If you can, I would get a better substrate... or for sure use gravel ferts.
Is that what your betta looks like? He's a BEAUTY! worth the money you paid for him

not bad, heater and filter kinda get in the way though....
