Hi, ever since my brother found out I was getting a fish tank, he really really wanted a minibow 5g. I figure he can heat it with a 5-15 heater and use it as a qt for my fish, then maybe get a betta and a few shrimp, and I'd like to get him some white cloud mountain minnows. If the minnows are possible, maybe I could put the temp a little cool for the betta and a little warm for the minnows.

see if you can convince your parents to buy him a 55 gallon with PC lighting and pressurized ph controlled CO2 system and use it as a "Q tank for your fish and plants" :dance
 
well i would see if i could get a larger tank smaller tanks are 1)more maintenance and 2) are more likely to ahve larger fluctuations in water chemistery faster than say a 20 gal tank
 
At the very least, you could get a 10 gallon… 5 and 10’s cost nearly the same. You can get lighting and heaters, filtration, etc. for 10 gallons at the same cost. 5 gallons are a waste of time and money IMO.
 
What about the stock?

(No. Not 10g. 5g is the maximum tank he is allowed to get. Parents. :rolleyes: )

I think you can fit a little school (5 maybe) of neons in a 5 gallon. They stay small and are pretty "low waste". Good luck! You are such a nice sister to help your brother out like this!

haha, no, just kidding, but you might try letting them read this thread and others on here that express the greater stability of larger tanks, and explain that it'll be lower maintenance and less frustrating to get a 10 or 20 gallon. it will give you more flexibility in species selection too. I'd reccomend a betta and some dwarf cories if you're stuck with a 5g though.
 
I would add no more than 1 type of fish to a 5 gallon tank. If it is a betta then just a betta, especially for a beginner. If you want the white clouds then just 5 of them. I have a school of 5 white clouds in a 10 gallon and while a 5 is doable they do need there space. With a 5 gallon they will spend a lot of time hovering in one spot, especially if there is a betta there.

I would add a betta and maybe a big apple snail or else shrimp if you can find them.
