haha I always thought they left the space because it uses less wood........aka cheaper!! (Not on tank stands with an actual CUTOUT, but ones that the tops are 4 pieces of wood connected in a rectangle)

noooo don't paint it light blue.... that will ruin that beautiful equiptment IMO.
