My Calvus Surprised me Today...

I went out yesterday to a beach I know of in the middle of nowhere and found a whole buttload of different size conchs ( I guess they're actually whelks ). I added a few of the ones I could clean up easily, but she still likes the small one, although she checked the others out. I'm not certain she knows what's going on... she responds to the male's quivering, and will even lead him to the shell, but form there she doesn't seem to know what to do. She ducks into the shell, and then emerges to watch him shake in front of the opening. Then she goes to the other side of the tank and flirts with the Gold Calvus male. Typical teenager I guess. The black male stands gaurd at the shell, he apparently knows the drill.
No one doesn't like the idea of trading them around? Not even a little annoyed? I don't have a problem with mixing species and interbreeding them, but selling or trading the offspring??? Call it a tank raised variant or designer strain, but seriously a spade's a spade and those fish are mutts. It's exciting for you, I know it is when my fish breed for the fisrt time, but letting them out into the hobby is irresponsible, whether you let the buyer know or not. These fish should be culled - as in not let out to the public.
I appreciate your concern. At this point until further research is done, I don't know that they would be considered hybrids. I'll be culling the majority of them, with the exception of a few that I would allow to grow to adulthood and give to Pittbull. I'm not looking to make a profit as I do with my purebreds.

hey afro man they are calvus and dont let anyone tell you different just because one is black and the other is gold (yellow) they are both calvus now on the other hand if it were a calvus and a compressiceps than it would be a mutt, they are not going to be a hybrid aye so no worries there and i wouldnt cull them unless they have deformities the main thing is the heart and swim bladder is in the same place of all species of calvus..
oh BTW sweet photo of her and the male by the shell awesome.. and cool that you can stroll down the beach and get shells i am so jealous aye..
Hey Pitt, I'm not too worried about what others think. I honestly don't want to see these guys go into the market, for the simple reason that if some are black, and some are white, there's no doubt in my mind they will be misrepresented eventually. I don't know that mine are purebred, so I have no illusions of making a buck, it's not why I keep fish anyway. I would be looking for F0 fish if I were wanting to breed for profit. I'd still be willing to trade with other hobbyists I know and trust, as I know you're not running a breeding program either. These were sold to me as black and white Calvus, not " Congo ", or " Chaitaka ", or any other location-specific designation. Anyhow, I'm not too worried about it. At this point, I'm just hoping they succeed in their attempts.

Breeding balck and white doesn't result in black and white fish. If I'm white and have kids with a black girl, some will not come out white and some black. They will be a mix. Same with the fish, resulting in a mutt. Fine fish to look at, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying they're ugly - but they will be misrepresented. And saying a white calvus and black calvus aren't mutts is illinformed. Dogs all have the same basic shape, but a beagle x poodle does not make a purebred beadle. Also, fish have long lifespans. Will pittbull keep them for their lives? What about when he trades them or gets rid of them, will he tell the other person what they are? Do a yahoo search of just calvus hybrid. Tons of pages on it. One quote even said the only thing worth less than a hybrid is a tang hybrid. I realize you're not profiting from them, but at some point they will get out. Use them as feeders or for your own display tanks, but they should not be distributed.

I am just a hobbyist i am not in it to profit if that were the case i would have a pet shop.
When Lake Tanganyika was still forming way back when Gods ruled i wonder who put black, white, yellow calvus in the same lake or could it have been that there were originally 2 fish that came together and formed the others, just a thought.
Hey afro dude if you don't want me to get rid of them in which case i wouldn't anyways, i wont and if it happens to be that i need to clear the calvus out i will destroy them because if they get into the wrong hands it could spell certain doom for all of the thousands of fish hybrids in circulation today even goldfish dating back to the early times, whew..:devil:
