Of course, I'm talking about the four-legged variant of cat here. Specifically, she goes after everything with Spirulina.

I noticed this the first time when I had just fed the cat and went on to put some Spirulina flakes into the aquarium. Suddenly, the cat left her food alone and came jumping up the aquarium. At first, I was afraid for the fish, but she just wanted to rip the fish food out of my hand. Now, whenever I want to feed some Spirulina flakes, I have to keep her away somehow.

She even eats the - completely vegetarian - Wardley algae wafers. They also contain mostly Spirulina. Once, when the bag with the wafers slipped out of my hand and fell to the floor, I couldn't grab the stuff fast enough to prevent her from eating quite a few wafers.

Looks as if I could start an experiment with keeping my cat as a vegetarian :D.

LOL!! I thought my cat was the only one that did this!! I first noticed it with shrimp pellets and she was quite interested but I could still shoo her away.
Then I started to notice that every time I opened the algae wafer bag she would go nuts!! I dropped one on the ground one day, not realizing it because they blend in quite well with my carpet, and all the sudden couldn't realize why she was freaking out, well she was just thrilled that she finally got to eat it!! Ever since then she has gotten even worse, actually begs for them, I don't give them to her, but sometimes wonder if it would really hurt?

So anyone else's cats react this way? Or are ours just wacked out?! :D

me too!!! My cat LOOOOVES fish food: flakes, frozen, pellets, and like yours Ulan, he goes nuts for algae wafers. I thought it was due to the fish and shrimp in everything, but if you're right, I guess the veggie fish food isn't a deterrent, either :D

I would bet the algae smell is hard-wired in their heads- "Here is a stream or pond with tasty fish in it" signal. After all, the wild cat wouldn't smell fish meat until they had already caught the fish. Finding and catching the fish is the tough part.

Fish food is pretty expensive cat food! Of course, cats shouldn't eat an exclusively vegetarian diet- they've got the ultra-short GI tract of a predator. But they do like munching on plant material. If you really want to make them happy, get some wheat "berries" and plant them in a shallow dish, and give them to your cat when they're 2 or 3 inches high.

In fact, I would bet that wheat sprouts or trimmed wheat grass would make a fantastic food for plant-munching fish- very vitamin rich.

LOL! I too have a psycho cat! Loves fish food. I dropped some flakes on the floor and before I could scoop it up she was happily munching away! She goes bonkers every time I open ANY kind of fishy food, wafers included.

Ah, I see my cat is not alone . She definitely likes the algae wafers. She also begs when I eat normal food, but she doesn't eat it when offered (except bread crust). But she's completely hot for algae wafers. I don't think they are bad for her. I just give her one as a treat once in a while :).

No worries, coupedefleur, I won't switch my cat's diet to alfalfa sprouts ;). I think there is something to what you say about the smell of the fish water. My cat eagerly licks up all aquarium water she gets hold of, although she usually doesn't drink (at least I hardly ever see it). Funny enough, she isn't interested in the fish. After having tried her teeth at the glass panels a few times, she decided that fish diet is too low on calories :D.

Maybe the food smells like seaweed. I had a cat that loved seaweed -- smells fishy I guess. Of course the cat wasn't quite right in the head. Goes bananas for bananas, broccoli, tomatoes, apples and peaches. She'd get mad at me for a few hours if I don't share my banana with her. She'd be right in front of me every time I pluck a banana off the bunch, regardless of how quietly I do it. Also loved to dunk rolled up socks in her water and drag them onto my bed as offerings. Loved that cat.

My macaw loves fish food too, but for other reasons. she likes to toss it all over the floor and run through it, making as large a mess as possible. All the while my other parrot is yelling 'NO! Bad girl! Stop it Madison! Bad girl!' So when I hear him yell at her I go running for my fish food. She even opens drawers to get to it.. little witch.
