My Dad Is Cheap

Another South Carolinian... South Carolina is slowly conquering AquariaCentral!

$100 is a great price... but never underestimate the cost of fish keeping... there always seems to be more expense even with "everything included".

Does the 100 gallon come with a stand too- if so that really is a fantastic price.

is there a greater underlying reason to not get a $100 birthday present? poor economy, dad doesn't have all the money that you might think he has, dad needs to save money for more important things for you???.... i'm sorry i will not offer any sympathy condolences suggestions or anything else but to just expect a rather expensive gift like that and then complain about not getting it is simply ridiculous.

took the words right out of my mouth
;)

while I agree.. $100 may seem like a pretty good deal. Please consider that the tank would have to be transported to you.

$100 is a lot of money in this economy.

Remember that your parents have other more essential expenses they have to deal with.

have you considered sharing the cost of this tank?

do you have a source of income of your own?

Here is an Idea, Get a job and become an independant fully functioning part of scociety... Otherwise Don't complain when you ask someone to buy an aquarium, that weighs probably a little over a hundred pounds, then drive across states to give to you as a present and they say no.

my dad only allows us to buy the family the most generic, disgusting food brands. but he just bought a 50000 dollar porsche. theres always someone with a worse dad...

i buy all my aquarium stuff with my own money, but its still nice to get a gift for your birthday from your parents ;)

OK... now let's be fair to the dads of the world.

That they don't spend as much money on you as you'd like is not a reason to call them bad fathers... some might be- but a father's quality is not judged by how much he spends on his children.

Until you become a parent you won't really realise how much money IS spent on you even if you think otherwise. You may think you do- but you really don't.

My wife came from a better off family than my own- and she actually wishes her parent's had spent less money and more time on her when she was a kid.

Money spent does not equal quality of parent.

(Oh, and generic foods are usually made by the same people as a name brand food in the same place)

Back to the original poster's topic- $100 is a great deal for that set-up - if the issue is that your father thinks the tank is over-priced he is incorrect. He may not realise how much they are...

...if he just doesn't want to spend that much- then that is his choice. It doesn't make him a bad father. It is just one extra expense on top of a mountain of other expenses.

Everyone wants their parents to be fiscally responsible and not dig themselves into a hole don't they?

Anyhow, good find and good luck. You can do great things with a 100 gallon aquarium.

to be fair to the poster(OP)
her profile indicates she is 14.
In many states too young to have a job, short of paper route or babysitting.

but the importance of fiscal responsibility looms large.

Zbbal I suggest you speak to your dad to get an understanding.

it is a good deal, but remember.. someone is paying for the maint on the tank.(power/water etc). it takes more energy to heat a 100 g tank.
Unless you are pitching in with bills.. it's someone else who is paying.

Her Dad must've read this thread. http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=200181&highlight=zbbal

If so, then he's very wise not to buy the OP this tank. Apparently she's just been introduced to the hobby for less than 2 months and is supremely struggling with a 10 gallon tank.

In light of this a 100 gallon tank is definitely way over her head.

Zbbal - I recommend that you get some experience with your 10 gallon before taking on added responsibility.

the generic food was really just an example, he just is always complaining about the familys spending habits, even tho he spends most of it on himself ;)

i was just about to mention the lack of a job market for 14 year olds these days....
