My Dad Is Cheap

Your Dad may not have the money, or he might. But it's up to him and that's all there is to it. I'm trying not to sound unsympathetic, but I am assuming you go back and forth between your parent's houses? If so who will take care of the tank when your not there?

Please try and look at it from your Dad's point of view.

Wow...there's a lot of harsh words on here directed a a VERY young girl who probably didn't really realize the way her words came across to all of the adults who are ripping her a new one. Maybe we could all think back to when we were 14 and remember when we simply couldn't understand how our parents were so mean as to not provide something we wanted. It's a frustrating time we all go through, and at least for me, I'm happy I didn't have 30 grownups telling me what an ingreat I was.

Zball, if I were you, I would look for something a little smaller, a middle ground, and ask if you could work off the difference somehow. When I wanted money and I was 14, I would mow the lawn, wash the car, etc. There's always a great deal out there. Sometimes they're right for you, sometimes they're not. You'll find the right one if you keep looking (aim for 30-40G).

To the OP, I would suggest starting with your 10 and then once you get experience on that move up to a bigger tank like a 20 and go from there. Upkeep on a 100 gal is going to be really tough on you if you don't have the experience yet. I myself have been doing this for years and I just now got a 55 gal. I started with a 10 then got a 20 and then a 40 and now finally a 55. They take work and you figure doing your weekly water changes into the mix and the time it takes to do all the work and you may see why everyone is saying to start small and work up.

As for your dad not buying it for you for your birthday, well I dont' know your situation or your dad's finances so I can't say if he is being unfair or not. If he did buy the tank for you would you keep it at his house where he would have to keep it up or would you want it at your moms? If you want it brought to you from TN you have to realize that you can't just put a 100 gal tank in a car and move it across several states. They are huge tanks and you would need a truck or a large van with seats removed to do that. Why not wait it out and find a larger tank closer to you when you are ready and experienced enough for it? Until then, enjoy the tank you have and keep an eye out for one locally. You can always buy it and then store it until you are ready and experienced enough to set it up and that will give you time to save money to afford all the expense that will come with it.

Fresh water tanks are really not all that hard to take care off, alot people on this website are just very much into this hobby and want the best for their fish. You dont always need the top notch stuff and especially in freshwater.

Bargain with your dad do 50/50 its reallynot all that hard to maintain a freshwater tank, and if you have all the stuff included already then thats even less money then your gonna need to spend on it.

But in light on my inexperience with generally very large tank maybe you should take it easy and get a little 20 gallon for much less money, im sure with that much space and much more room the tank will be harder to maintain especially with only 2 months into this hobby.

Hold up!

First off, I'm fourteen. I can't get a job.

Second, I offered to pay half when I asked him a few weeks ago. He agreed, and told me to call him when I found something.

I'm by no means angry at my father. I just couldn't understand why he couldn't see how great a deal that was. I really don't even have a place to put it yet, so it would be more of a future investment.

This isn't about it being too much for him to buy, or that he's worried about me keeping up with the maintenance. -He told me to put sea coral in my 10 gallon freshwater aquarium. Really, he isn't all that concerned or aware about freshwater aquariums.-

He won't buy it because he thinks the man has overpriced the aquarium. Quote, "Some people just overprice their stuff." He went on to say that we'd find a reasonably priced aquarium.

As for those who have mentioned my other thread about my 10 gallon: Yes, I am new to all this. I'm not fully educated with aquariums, or anything of the sort. I hope that with the help of this community, I'll be able to successfully keep multiple aquariums. I really enjoy having my 10 gallon, even with the problems I've encountered.

I realize my error in starting this thread. I was upset, and wrote my mind without thinking. Please excuse me.

We all have our ugly moments, you know?

I'm 15 an I'm already haing to pay this worhtless government income tax. So, yes maybe I did overeact a little. However this is a good deal, but do you really want to jump from a 10g to a 100g? that is a pretty good jump, plus it requires substantially more work to get it right with equipment etc. etc.

One other thing, I didn't plan on setting it up right away. Way to much anxiety. I'd have waited a good while before I used it.

I was going to keep it in storage until later.

I plan on using my other ten gallons before anything else.

Don't feel bad, I did the same thing a few months ago (only much worse...lol) when my betta was sick and got flamed to death about keeping him in a bowl. Anyway, long story short, he died and I sort of blew up at everyone who was rude and left for a few weeks... as you can see I couldn't resist coming back. ;) I'm only a year younger than you and I totally understand where you're coming from on this issue. My parents have almost totally stopped paying for my fish stuff, and if I were you (or your dad) I wouldn't be very inclined to pay $100 for anything fish related. (LOL, I always get the same thing "It's your money." now THAT'S pressure!! haha) Now I do like the 50/50 idea, but 60/40 may end up being better since that's what your dad first wanted to pay (in the $30-$40 range). BTW, you should probably wait anyway until your 10g is running smoothly, so if you miss this (pretty great) deal there's always another one coming (especially with something like craigslist... you may even find a better one!). ;) I'm not sure if that was any help at all, but good luck with your fishkeeping endeavor. :)

ok here is my 2 cents

1.in reality a good dad tries to hear the heart of his kids and make their visions come to pass as best he can, not that I am saying your dad is bad, but I would get that tank and bring it to you.

2.a bigger tank is way easier to keep on track than a smaller tank hands down.

3.regardless of the thread she made about a 10g anyone with basic command of forums can be very educated in less than 1 week on this forum on how to keep a good tank, ah the wonders of the internet.

I would suggest showing your dad more than a few adds for setups and see if you can shoot the person a deposit on the tank and get them to hold it for you, check around your neighbourhood see if anyone needs some chores done to raise fast cash.
