My DIY light fixture

Calling it a work of art is a very nice compliment. I'm not sure I can say that myself, but I appreciate it gmh.
:headbang2:

Bulbs are:

1. GE Ecolux 6500k
2. Aqua Medic Planta
3. GE Ecolux 3000k
4. Aqua Medic Ocean White

I bought the Aqua Medics at aquacave.com for about $17-$18 each with a free shipping coupon I found on the net. I went cheap with the GEs and payed about $9-$10 each from some online horticulture store. I had a 15% coupon for this place too. Come to think of it, I had to buy the endcaps also. They were only a dollar a piece.

Looks like I miscalculated the overall cost some. I guess it was closer to $65-$70 for the lamps with endcaps.

I can't really take a decent tank shot right now. I am trying to grow out a carpet before adding water and other plants. I will be adding some colorful plants in the near future. I'll post some pics then. I am hoping to get some good reds from this setup.

The GEs are yellower and the Aqua Medics are whiter. I think they balance out nicely, but the Aqua Medics by themselves look the best to me.

I also have the luxury of different color views for morning, midday, evening, and night. This should also prolong bulb life. They are only running for about 6 hours a day each.

good lighting work :) rock on!

What did you make the fixture from? did you happen to take any pics while you were building it? would love to see some how to's. I am adding this thread to my favorites bookmark.

Hi, thanks,

It's probably worthless to post here since it's been so long, but I guess I will anyway.

I haven't been on any forums in a long time. The IT department took the internet away at work, and that's when I used it most. I should be getting it back soon though hopefully. I've also been too busy to finish my other hood unfortunately.

I don't have any build pictures for this. I prefer not to take any because it's such messy process for me. It's mainly built from cheap plywood, and a few other spare parts.

So far, this thing has worked too well for me. The tank was looking great for a while, but then I neglected it some. I think I have it under control now however. Maybe I'll post some tank shots under the different lights after I scape a little more.

I think I'll eventually use this light on a 55g. It's bright! I'm finding the upkeep a bit much on the 30g. I'll probably stilt it on some makeshift risers in the meantime. I don't have much time for a high-tech tank right now.

very nice work :) impressive ... good luck and keep the good works ( and send pics here :D )

In other words, someone kept going onto this "aquariacentral.com" website during work hours, and they couldnt figure out who, so they took it away :D

Haha, no. My direct boss is fine with me using the internet as much as I want. The company hired a network Nazi that had blocking issues. Apparently he blocked too much from the wrong people, so they canned him thankfully:woot:

really cool. Should be pretty good for a 55g. We gotta see pics of it on the tank though.

Honestly, it's not the prettiest hood for a tank. I am pleased with my workmanship and the design, but i don't think it belongs on a showpiece aquarium.

It fits the rim of my 30g perfectly, I may have to do some modifications for it to fit well with a 55g.

Thanks to all for the kind replies.
