The female will remain weak for a bit, recovery time for a cichlid past maternity can take a couple of weeks or so.

Yes more than likely she will die in that breeder box, mbuna and or african cichlids can not handle the small confines like those nets or breeder boxes it causes way to much stress and since she will feel trapped she may not eat.

I know you say you have done this already with the breeder box thing, but in the future i would plan ahead and set up a 20gal for a maternity ward in the event she recovers and the process starts all over again.

The fry may be ok for now but once they get some size i would release them or rehome what you dont want.

Anyway I have the 6 fry who still have thier yolk sac in a plastic breeding box and the female in the other. I brought a breeding net but I know it wouldn't work since they are laying on the bottom at the moment and they'll get killed easily.

You are right, don't use the breeding net. Also be careful if the plastic breeding box has tiny holes and is into the main tank. I have read about fry been suctioned through these holes by adult cichlids. Put the fry apart from the main tank.

I went to take a shower at 12 pm and when I came back, only 2 remained and one looked injured. He passed away.

I already brought a box with the holes being on the side instead of the bottom because I know it'll take a few days before they start swimming.

I don't know how, but 4 was sucked out of holes half thier size.

I wrapped the box with the net from the breeding net.

One hell of a lesson.

Oh and i also noticed stringy poo from that female, is it internal parasites or simply because she hasn't been eating while holding?

I made my own fry boxes. I bought those cheap tupperware things glad or whoever makes and cut the ends off. Then use super glue to glue on the net from a breeder net or, like me, cut up a filter sock and glue it on. I then punched holes in the lid with a pen and put styrofoam inside the container when I have fish in it. this allows lots of water movement through the fry box, gives a place for oxygen exchange, and it's boyant. plus, it's in a large tank. When you do water changes in a small tank, they make a large difference in water chemistry which can hurt the fry easily. Having them in the large tanks makes the changes much smaller on their delicate bodies. And don't worry about the glue, anyone who frags knows how safe it is.

As far as the poo, don't worry about it yet. give it another day or so. She may be terrified from being caught, handled, stripped of her babies, and put in confines.

The mom is now eating and trying to attack the cichlids outside of the box, I think she'll be aight.

The one little fry is still laying on the bottom, how long will it take before hes free swimming?

Yes, the mom will be alright very soon. The fry should be swimming well in one or two more days. Maybe it is nervous looking all those big fishes around him. Good luck with him and I'm sorry about the hard lesson. :mad2:

i dont know if anyone else has already wrote this or not but if you remove her to another tank never pull her out of the water bcuz there is a chance she will spit the eggs.
