My figure 8 puffer's left fin- updated??

I noticed my puffer was hanging out on the bottom. Upon closer look, his little left fin is gone! I don't know what would have eaten it, the fish I have are all supposed be peaceful. I havn't seen any agressive behavior. Is he going to die? Should I take him out now? I don't know what to do. help!

Thank you all in advance.

OK, so I have been stting for nearly an hour, watching for any agressive behavior towards puffer, who was laying in the corner, fluttering only the right fin, and curling his tail in a strange position. Suddenly he began swimming around. His left fin is THERE.

I feel a little silly now, but I swore it was gone. I even had my husband come and confirm. So, his fin is there, but I still feel like it was very odd behavior. I fed them, I noticed that the barbs are spitting out the flakes and eating the shrimp. Puffer does seem a bit skiddish.Could there be competition for food? Will the barbs gang up on puffer? Am I being paranoid?

According to the store clerk, puffers do best when they are the only puffer. They tend to be agressive towards other puffers. I have done some online searches but have not been able to confirm this info.

I apologize for all of the questions, and thank everyone for any advice.

It's just a 10. The puffer is about 1.5 inches. i have a pleco and 5 barbs. The fish store guy said the puffer would be compatible. He had been fine in the tank for three days. He was great just a few hours ago.

I suggest you read up on puffers. I was going to buy one until I read up on them. Very difficult to maintain and it might just be a brackish water puffer. When young (which sounds like yours is) they are peaceful but once they mature are very aggressive and usually will kill off any tank mates.

They are adorable though. Good Luck!

P.S. They have to be fed a specific type of food (hard shell food; example snails) otherwise apparently their teeth will overgrow and they will not be able to eat anything at all.
