MY FIRST 250 Gallon DIY TANK

Consider a plywood tank, it would make the tank cheaper overall, seeing as how you only need 1 pane of thick glass. Not to mention, less chance of leakage when done right.

I like that idea, but i dunno what wood to use and where to get it. Could u suggest some further references such as links and websites for building it using Plywood?

thanks

Intresting

Ask Sploke how he built his, he should be able to give you alot of pointers.

As far as how they work, Often times the other 3 walls are built out of plywood, sometimes a fiberglass liner is made and then a marine epoxy is coated over that or the bare plywood making it waterproof, and the front pane is siliconed in to the front for your viewing pleasure. It becomes really cost effective on bigger tanks, not so much smaller tanks because of the work involved/materials used.

Here is a some 500g tank here http://www.jonolavsakvarium.com/eng_diy/2200litre/2200litres.html

Hey, i like this concept though i admit am nervous, i think its worth a try, will go over to the market n fetch some plywood. ofcourse will have to experiment on a smaller scale and if it works will proceed with the orginal size. but please tell me something, Epoxy works great as an adhesive right? can i use it in combination with fibre glass to make it more stronger and waterproof, to avoid the water leaking into the seams? If so how is it done... i checked the link but could not get much information on the combinations and type of epoxy to be used and its application.... i would help a gr8 deal if someone could gimme a step-by-step instruction to follow....

thanks for the amazing support u guys are giving me....

what is usually done is a fiberglass layer and resin is added to the inside, this to make the marine epoxy nick resistant to nicking like handling rocks, driftwood and other hard pointed objects.
Do u use an epoxy resin on the fiberglass cloth, or first apply the epoxy coating and then apply the fiberglass?

second most important question to consider now is can i grow plants and aqua scape it?

of course you can grow plants and aquascape it. you wipll just need to have enough light and nutrients

The fiberglass and resin is laid down first, then the marine epoxy is laid over that once the resin is dry.

Aquascaping is the fun part, should be easy once you have a ladder. As far as plants, long as you have enough light, no problem. T5 HO would be the optimal choice. Might be able to find the ballasts somewhere.

I have read alot abt West Systems Epoxy brands. Can anyone, tell me how to apply it, wot combinations to use and which hardeners to use?

thnx
