My First Aquaclear 20!

anyone else have these? what media do you use??
I use a 10-30g Aqua clear foam insert(with "bio max") in the bottom and a mix of Ammo-Carb on top in the bio net it comes with, after the new media needs changing. I change bag or clean foam every two weeks, alternating changes, to keep a good bacteria count going.
Bio max is a new upgraded insert to help with bacteria count.Same price.
Look for it on the box next time you shop for some.Love mine.

in my Aquaclear i've got one sponge (that came with it) and then loose biomax (any brand is pretty much good enough), and a piece of filter floss on top. works great. i usually replace the floss weekly during a water change, but this is a planted tank with wussy plants near the intake tube (yeah, my bad, lol) and it gets gunky in there.

I noticed the media looks new in the photos. is it all brand new and this is the only filter running on the tank? be prepared to do a fish in cycle, since there is no longer a filter full of good bacteria on the tank.

mine all have 2 sponges and the bio media..

I have several AC filters.. placement is sponge, sponge , biomedia.

the sponges help cut back on detritus inn the bio media.

I also use double sponges in my AC's. I toss the carbon bag when I can't get anything more out of it and it becomes too clogged to be an effective bio-media. For my large tanks I use double sponge and poly-fil. I empty the bag of bio-media around the intake stem.

i keep a spare little sponge in that part that i slip on to the tank end of the U shaped intake piece when i take the intake tubes off to clean them. as long as the U tube end is completely underwater this works great for keeping your filter running while you do a lil maintenance & keeping your finkids from going for an impeller ride, lol. just make sure you shoo the finkids away before you take the intake tubes off the filter!

I agree with others on double sponges, etc. Get an A/C 20 sponge, cut a slit in it and slip it over your intake tube. Cuts way down on cleaning the internal sponges, saves babies and give you more filtration.

yaa i did that, since i have 2 red sea nano filter on my 2.5 gallon tank, and a tonnn of baby snails and shrimp, i got an extra AC pad and and cut it in half and slipped it over the intake thing...

i also put a second filter pad instead of carbon

What tools did you use to make the cutouts on your cover for the filters to fit? I need to cut my cover as well for my nano filter to fit and the cover to fit properly on top of the tank.

I have the RS nano filters in my 2.5 gallon tanks. They seem to be fine in there. I also have a few ACs. Love the ACs. Very easy, very dependable. Much better than the penguin filters that I had used before.
