Well I finally got my 5G setup again and decided to go with a betta this time, i feel so bad seeing them kept in those little bowls with no heat or filters or anyhintg. took a baby sword and a runner off off one of my mother plants, i dont know how well it will do with 15 watts though, Do youthink i should put that peice of wood back in there or just leave it out and give the extra space? His name is Sun King.

Put the wood in. Bettas like the tannins that the wood releases and you could attach some Java moss or anubias to it and make him a pretty cool jungle. Bettas also like to rest on places close to the surface at night so they can get a little breath of air in the middle of the night so a broad leaf plant would work up on one of the branches.

Yep...add back the wood.

I like the wood and moss/fern/anubias idea as well. My betta likes to "bed down" in the moss at the top of his tank decoration.

I agree. Bettas come from softer water anyways and he will do well over time with the wood in the tank. The wood will soften the water over time. Plus I think the tank will look better with the wood in the tank. Tie some moss or anubias to it with some sewing thread that will disinigrate over time. Very nice!
