My first DIY project... And its big!

Lol I see those all the time. I just got 125 off Craigslist a couple months ago for 200. Came with stand, tank and canopy but. . . Wasn't feeling the stand and canopy AT ALL!!! Aka 2x4's weren't cutting it lol. Sooo went out and bought a new stand ($250) and kept the 48" light from my 90. Which is cool because of how the light spreads down the tank anyway. So had to invest a bit more but didn't have to pay $1000 for new.

I'm thinking that when I build my stand, I'm going to try to find a way to suspend the light fixture above the tank w/o putting it in the ceiling.

I wish I lived in a more populated area. It's hell to find a good deal. That said I didn't do too bad on my 50g and I'm working on a deal for a 75g right now. I won't get them unless they have a wood stand because I'm not good enough to make a nice looking one and I don't have anything to convert.

Now one thing I will be doing DIY is a wet/dry setup. I've been researching it quite a bit and trying to figure out if I can make one to fit under my 50g and my future 75g. It's rough though because of area constraints and I'd love to convert a smaller tank instead of making one from acrylic because I don't think I could make it look very nice. Still hoping I can find someone to make a couple for me =/

Good luck with your project and and I'm very happy for you. With my specifics for buying (needing a decent wood stand) I can't find a 120g for less than $400 even on CL and would need to add stuff to trade to hit a number like that

thats the great thing about sumps though, that they don't have to look nice as long as they work. I'm sorry that its so hard for you to find a good deal. I wish you luck on your quest to find something cheap that works.

Oh yeah it's all good. Thanks for the well wishes. I'm also impatient so I'm bad at waiting for a good deal to come along. I've fallen so much in love with this hobby though so I'm liquidating all my old hobbies into fish keeping (knife collecting, drumset, gas powered R/C airplane, my shooting range .22). I don't know why I love it so much now but it is just great and I can't wait til the day I acquire what I'm planning on acquiring.

Yeah if it comes down to it I might just go with the big Rubbermaid tubs and 2 five gallon buckets for the tray and biomedia lol. Found a good return pump that was recommended on here on amazon for $65 so it won't be too bad. Just acquire the parts slowly XD (I hate waiting)

after doing a lot of reading, I have concluded that the tank really does need trim, otherwise the stability would be a big issue. I have called as many manufacturers as I could and can't find anything. I called my lfs and asked if he could look into something for me, so I will be calling him back tomorrow afternoon, keeping my fingers crossed, otherwise I will have to make the new trim myself.

Ouch well good luck. I hope you find something so you can save yourself the trouble. Keep s updated on the restoration

I am always looking on Craig's List in LA for a used tank and I can never find a good deal. I did however get a 10 gallon tank at a garage sale for $8.00.

best deal i got was a 110G for 60 bucks.. ( or was it 80.00?, not sure ) anyways, came with a magnum 350 and a eheim 2250 ( both canisters ) and a bunch of other stuff... all in all i got a great deal :)

That's the best deal I heard so far.
