My First Fish! A few questions...

Used tanks can often be found cheap if you look at the Pets section on Craig's List, in the newspaper, or look at garage sales. Even if you find one that's cracked, there is info online about how to fix aquariums and it doesn't seem that hard to do (I've not tried yet myself, but I'm sure other folks here on this site have and could help you).

Good for you for wanting to make sure he has a proper sized home! Goldfish that are taken care of properly can live many years (20+ years in some cases), so it will pay off if you can get him a big enough tank so he can be healthy. :)

Personally I would get a two more goldfish and get him a 55 gallon. The fish would love you for that. I think 55 is about bare minimum for a 14" fish. Anyways IME goldfish tend to do better in groups. Also don't bother with a heater. Your goldfish will be just fine. I have goldfish in an outdoor pond in michigan. And I haven't really seen any 14" goldfish. I know that some get that big but I think it is more common to see about 8-10".

Most 55g are only 12" wide so they aren't even big enough for a 14" fish.

I wouldn't take him back! I would just get him a bigger home, different food and lots of love!
