Hi everyone this is my first post (I hope I did it properly) I have read a ton of them for the good advice you guys give and have learned a lot. I have 2 tanks at present one larger one 55 gal with my guppies and a small 5 gal with "harvey" my betta. He is a grouch and likes his space! Don't we all....I do have an interesting expereince that just happened and a couple of questions for you guys though- read on.

I have a tank full of guppies (Love them!!) and had a female very pregnant that seemed to die in labor. I can't be sure she was in labor but she was acting unusual for the previous few days and she was very plump also when she passed she had a protrusion from her caudal area (looked kind of like my female betta gets when she is gravid)
Anyhoo when I found her I mourned for a moment and then scooped her out and preformed a fishy "C" section. She was definately dead ( no movement or reaction at all to either being removed from the tank or the immediate surgery)
I put her over a fry trap gave a gentle sqeeze and sure enough fry! Most were dead, some were eggs with eyes with no signs of life that have since fungused but about a dozen are live active swimming and look like normal fry and some others have egg sacks!
I have never done this before and to tell the truth never really thought of it ( I have had other pregnant females die before but assumed the babies died with the mother not a lot but it happens occasionnally)

Has anyone else ever experienced this kind of thing with livebearers?

Anything special you guys can recommend to raise the premie fry?

Welcome to AC!

Wow! I would make a post in general freshwater to get more attention to your question. Best of luck with the premies!

:welcome:

Thanks all, the guppy babies are doing great! Judging from feedback I have gotten from other guppy folks its not all that uncommon I guess I just thought it was.
Anyhow I got approx. 12 living fry or so it is hard too count they are so little ( and quick!) I uploaded some pictures of my guppy tank that I really want to turn into a community tank eventually.

Hello and welcome! I would never have thought to do a fish c-section! Glad to hear the babies are doing well. :)

welcome and good luck with the babies!
