I love your tank mate it looks like a real winner.
the sponge thing looks more like dead coral to me, but keep an eye on it. If it gets any larger then you may have a type of sponge.
and yes that is coraline alge you have growing in there
definantly go with the gobie and pistol shrimp. but be warned you will always look at your tank when the shrimp clicks his nipper, it sounds like cracking glass lol
i would have a flame angle as a centerpeice, and mabe a yellow bellied damsil
also Known as Azure Demoiselle ( Chrysiptera hemicyanea) I have 2 in my tank and they are probably the most peacefull of all damsils.
