Um. I got 3 black tetras about a week ago. I did my first water change today. Everything seemed to go well. Then I noticed my fish were acting a little strange. During the day when the lights are on they stay in their own territories at the bottom of the tank. But now as it has gotten dark and I was getting close to turning the lights off they were swimming together, and not observing their territories. Now they seem to be schooling, and they are spending some of the time swimming up one of the corners of the tank. They dont seem to be excited when I get in front of the tank like they normally do. I checked the ammonia levels, they are fine. Is there something wrong with my fish? or are they just doing something normal?

Most tetras tend to be schooling fish, I'd say the behavior is normal. the water change probably got them to school, and you'll see them do their own thing again.

did you cycle the tank before you put the fish in? do you test for nitrites and nitrates as well as ammonia? if the schooling/hiding behavior continues, they may be stressed from something other than the water change, including high nitrite levels.

Could you give us numbers on the ammonia, nitrite and nitrates.

The ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate are 0. The tank was not cycled before I got them. Before I went to sleep the fish were getting back to a little bit more normal pattern. As of this morning, they are acting the same as they usually do.
