my fish are turning brown! help

Personally, I would not bother with a QT tank if most of the fish look infected. Google cotton fungus and see if it looks like that. Even for fish disease in general, you should get some good pics. Depending on what you were treating with and if that medicine is still appropriate for the disease you have, you could put in carbon for a day or so to help clean out the meds. and cloudiness if you need to switch meds.

Are there any other symtoms? Like swelling or eyeballs protruding? Or anything else that you can notice. Ive been doing some googling but there are a few diseases with your symtoms. Some extra info might narrow the paramaters.

Well with the serpae tetras that are all now dead one of them had his eyes popping out and with the oto that just died somehow i guess his eye feel out or got eaten out even though he was still alive at that time. i'll do a breakdown of what exactly happened.

-During cycling and a week or two after cycling was over all the serpae tetras that were in there began getting what we are pretty sure wassepticemia.. only one of them had popping out eyes.. (at the same time the giant danios started turning a reddish color and still are reddish but we were told this means they are ready to have babies)

-A week and a half ago: The dwarf peacock rainbow had what looked liek a tiny piece of poop coming out of his head.. a few days later he had one coming off of his lip/mouth which was obviously bothering him.
-Around this time all the fish started turning brownish. It looks almost like an algae or mold growing on them but its not clumped or hairy it looks liek somthing is just growing. Besides the head it is noticable AROUND the scales.. kind of like each scale is outlined by this stuff.

-This week: The dwarf peacock rainbow died. The next day the large ornate rainbow died with no symptoms or signs of anything except for a lot of brown on him (especially his head area and his fins). The oto's eye either fell out or got eaten out and a few days later died. Now all of the fish except for the ram have brown stuff on them. The other dwarf peacock rainbow is loosing color in his tail.. it used to be all red but the red is going away and now there really isnt any color. Most of the fish have raggedy looking fins even though there have been no nips but not liek they have been eaten. they just look thinner and not healthy. The turquoise rainbows and the female threadfin rainbow are swimming with their top fins up which we havent seen before. Most of the fish looks like they have these lighter areas on them (not white like i said before.. just light). The male threadfin rainbow is just hiding in the plant which is unusual because he is normally always swimming around. The female one is staying at the top which doesnt normally happen either. But they are not gasping for air and since that first rainbow died i havn't seen any fluke looking things on any of them.

Today: everything is still the same. we took out the driftwood, we bought some aquarium salt and put that in, we are continuing the Maracyn II doses, put some stress coat and also bought some Maroxy anf put that in there. It says they can all be used at the same time.. i sure hope so.

Sorry this is so long. We tried taking pictures of the fish but now the water is SOOO cloudy from the maracyn II and its hard to see. We still have the dead ornate rainbow in the freezer to preserve it so tomorrow or tonight I will take pictures of it so you can see what the brown stuff looks like.

2 giant danios
1 german blue ram
1 dwarf peacock rainbow
2 threadfin rainbows
1 blue acara cichild
1 farlowella
2 cory cats
2 turqoiuse rainbows
2 otos

what has died: 6 serpae tetras, 1 ornate rainbow, 1 oto and 1 dwarf peacock rainbow

well that the thing.. we're not really sure. it was a huge piece that we got in the turtle section at the store. it was just a box with all different sizes of driftwood. its not grapevine or anything like that but it is a pretty dark brown and it does not float whatsoever. we had to drill it down to a piece of slate to make it stay. are there certain types that can kill fish?

It could be because it is from the retile section. Sometimes they put in things that are beneficial to reptiles but deadly to fish. At any rate, I'd take it out for a while and start doing big daily water changes.

Oh yeah, I like your avatar. :D

i took the fish out of the freezer so i could take a picture of it but i just thought of something.. i dont know if this has to do with anything but there is no algae growth whatsoever in the tank. the light is on for 12 hours every day and it has a little natural light coming in. does this mean anything??

sad news today.. as of this morning one of the turquoise rainbows is dead. this is after all the meds and after taking the driftwood out. i took pictures of the dead ornate rainbow so as soon as i figure out how to post them i'l have them up. poor fish :(

I did some googling and it could be a viral infection. I found one that has pretty similar symtoms. But I'm really just taking a wild guess. From what I have read It's almost always fatal.

If you have lost all your fish. I would highly recomend you disinfect everything. Even your filters. I know what I am saying sucks. But If it wiped everything out i wouldnt risk reinfection. Unfortunatly what I propose means cycling your tank over again.

But then again I could be wrong.

update: pictures

Picture 1: this is the ornate rainbow that died.. notice the fin how raggedy it looks and look where the fin connects to the body how dark brown it is.

Picture 2: this is the cichlid look on the scales on his head.. the brown definition around his scales.. this is a good picture of what all the fish have..

Picture 3: this is also the dead ornate rainbow. if you know anything about rainbows they are not this brown. look at all of his fins they are all brown, the stripes are even a brownish shade.

Picture 4: this is the dwarf peacock rainbow thats left. the picture is a little blurry but if you look on his head you can see the brown and going down the top of his back. this brown is more advanced then in picture 2 on the cichlid.

Picture 5: this is the turqouise rainbow, its hard to see but if you look on his face you see the brown again.. this picture shows it a little redder then it really is.. the color of brown on picture two is the real color brown.

by the way... we now have some sort of white stuff (not ich and not cottony showing up on the turquoise rainbow but we couldnt get a good picture of it)

to those who wanted pictures here they are.. if this gives anyone any ideas whatsoever on to what type of disease is goin on, let us know. and thank you all for the advice so far.

:help:
