My fish have torn fins.

Thing is. I have Nitrates, not Nitrites. If a cycle hits... I think some of my fish would die off on me, kuhli loaches do not like cycles nor do the chiclids.
A mini cycle just means that the bacteria colony was disturbed enough to not be able to handle the entire bio load, not that you have to cycle all over again...which is why you can show trace amounts of ammonia and still see nitrate.

Even if the ammonia isn't directly causing the fin damage, it still is a stressor and will make it harder for them to heal.

Oh, I am sure of that....I know how crazy that can be!! I guess I just meant that the extra ammonia is gonna make it harder for them to heal.

Wednesday? So, you're going to wait two days and retard the healing process for your fish's fins because you think they're going to be bothered by a water change?

The ammonia is going to cause more stress than changing the water will. The difference is, they know where the new water is coming from, and can run away from it. They can't run away from the ammonia that's everywhere.

Draining the water well out? Sorry, I don't understand what you mean.

How are you doing water changes that it scares the fish? I've moved fish around several times, including some that it took me hours to chase the buggers down and not had torn fins. So...I'm baffled as to how or what happened that would damage ALL of them. What did you use to catch them?

I wouldn't put salt in. Clean water is way, way better than salt.

Then I strongly suggest investing in Prime. It'll bind some ammonia, and if that's all you need it for, occasionally, it'll last a long time, and won't need replacement like ammonia absorbing media.
