My Fly River Turtle...

I'm confused, I thought they were illegal to have in the U.S.

They are illegal to import out of their natural habitat. Ones already within the US because of past importation can still be sold.

i still love the turtle. i saw a clutch of babies for sale over here..$1000 each, and thats in australia..u lucky duck..

You want to lower the water level in the tank some to accommodate a basking area for this turtle to dry out and bask. Perhaps lower the water level 35% from the top at minimum. It needs a reptile bulb at least on one side on top of UV. You may try a big piece of cork driftwood, but a big piece would be needed to support the turtle's weight. Soak the wood before you put it in. Get a nice size piece so it lasts the turtle a while and totally emerge the turtle from the water. Don't let the water or the tank temperature get too hot.

pig nosed turtles (australian) and florida soft shelled turtles are different species. i am thinking of the pigg nosed turtles..google them. two different species..

All turtles require sunlight. Enough said. Its better to have a basking spot and not find out if the turtle will get shell rot. Giving the animal the option and observing is the best bet. Cork takes up absolutely no swimming space but the turtle may get too heavy for it. You could also try a turtle dock.
