My gel food

So I finally got around to making gel food. It was pretty simple. I made it from fish food, baby food and gelatin. Basically I took about a cup and a half of dried fish food. I used hakari ciclid pellets, dried bloodworms, daphina or however u spell it. New life spectrum and some shrimp pellets. Added a quarter cup of hot water and let it sit till hydrated and mashed into a paste. Then added 1 jar of mixed green veggie baby food. Then bloomed a packet of gelatin in 2/3 cups hot water. Stirred together and set in the fridge. After it set I cut into cubes and froze. The fish love it. Gonna get a blender next and true with beef heart and fish.

That's pretty much how I make mine! I suggest getting a stick blender (immersion blender). Sunbeam makes one that retails for

What type of geletin?

the bad thing about using gelitin is that most of it is made from animal cartilage.
the problem with using this is that fish are unable to digest mammel cartilage, therefore they can not digest the gelatin.
 
Agar agar can also be used. I'm thinking of trying a small batch with pamona pectin to see how that works.

Gelatin contains more copper than agar agar does. I was told at AppleSnail.net that trace amounts of copper are ok for at least the apple/mystery snail varieties. Gelatin is a LOT cheaper then agar agar, though... so, if price is an issue, it's something to think about. Interested in hearing about how the pectin recipe works out.

Crepes! Apparently gelatin does indeed contain a fair amount of copper (8% DV for humans). What the heck...a lot of these recipes I've seen say to use gelatin over agar agar if you have inverts because agar agar contains copper. That's not cool... I'm glad I hadn't made any yet.

well it hasnt seemed to bother my ramshorn snails a bit. and all the fish seem happy. it smells horrible to make btw but that is probably why the fish love it.
