status: my rams are skittish. I want to mate them, but I'm not sure if they are male and female or not. I have a CAE that keeps sucking on them, so I'm going to get him out of the tank as soon as I can.

params:
Nitrate:40ppm
Nitrite:0
Hardness:100ppm
Alkalinity:150ppm
PH:7.8 (I know it's high, but even after 5 or so water changed with only RO water it ddidnt seem to go down.)

suggestions:?

peat moss and driftwood lower pH... whats your substrate and deco rock?

as stated above, driftwood can lower PH. I'd start with that. you didn't include ammonia... is that 0?

You use RO water and didn't lower pH/KH?

not really concerned with pH so much.. but GH should be relatively low for Rams.

what's the tank temp?

Test the RO.

on top of all the suggestions above, some flat slates. GBR are one of easiest to keep/breed, imo, when proper conditions are given.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but shouldn't the nitrAtes be under 20 ppm? Yours seem a bit high at 40!! A water change should help bring them down.....

Noods,
Not always. 40 is safe for the rams.. the nitrate in my tanks tend to hover around 40 with no issues,.. remember that some places have nitrate in the source(mine is 20 out of the tap).

more common we use the nitrate reading as a barometer to change water.
but in reality a reading of 40 is quite safe for all but the most sensitive fish.. and remember.. I keep Discus

in planted tanks the TDS may actually be high enough to cause problems but the nitrate may read very low even 0 . common in planted tanks.

Do you know where the rams came from before your LFS? It will make a difference in terms of the water chemistry you need. Locally bred rams or those imported from Europe generally are hardier than Asian rams and can adapt to harder water easily IME. In most cases LFS stocks are from Asia so a low GH/KH wouldn't be a bad idea.
