hye i need help with my pearl gourami,he is always at the surface gasping like he is breathing heavily. any help would be apreciated.oh and it a bio wheel.it for a 60 gal

We need more info:

tank size
filtration/water motion
tankmates
water parameters (amoni, nitrite and nitrate specifically)

55gal,no he doesnt have red gills, his tankmates are,3raibow sharks,1dalmation molly,many different types of tetras,& 4 cherry barbs.

Still not enough information. We need to know the water parameters and filtration/and anything else that produces water motion.
 
do you put salt in the tank? what is your ammiona? ph? no2? no3? do you have a test kit what kind? fliter set up. air pump? have you put any med. in?

the ph is 6.8 the amonia is0.28

they meant on the inside, not the gill covers. if the insides of the gills and skin around them are red and irritated, it usually indicates ammonia or nitrite in your water.

It's most likely the amonia that's causing him to do that. You need to start doing enough water changes to keep that level at or VERY close to zero until the bacteria catch up.
