If we stuck you in a shoe box to live how would you feel?

fighting fish need TROPICAL water temps and this requires to be filtered. Tropical fish keeping isnt like getting a goldfish from the circus where you bung it in a bowl of cold water and leave it. Id suggest you save up and definately get a small tank with a filter and a heater and if the poor fish survives try to learn something about the interest you are involved in :)
I'm not arguing with your point here, but please do not say "Tropical fish keeping isnt like getting a goldfish from the circus where you bung it in a bowl of cold water and leave it." Is that how you think goldfish should be kept?

Goldifsh can grow 8-10" in size and need a MINIMUM of 15 gallons of doubled-filtered water EACH. If kept properly they can live 20+ years. A goldfish kept in a bowl is lucky if it lives 1-3 years.

Strizzy, you can get a one gallon tank for about 10$ at walmart, but a better option would be to get a two gallon and one of those little jr heaters from walmart. You don't need a filter for a tank that small as long as you are good with the weekly/biweekly water changes.

I've seen those little "AllGlass" 2 1/2 gallon tanks for 13$ at various lfs and a jr heater at walmart costs about $7.....you can use a piece of plastic canvas for a cover...a large sheet of that costs less than a dollar at walmart (find it in the craft section). I have seen small strip lights for the 2 1/2 gallon tanks at petco for $11...but a light isn't necessary if you get low light plants...such as java fern or water sprite.

OR.....if that still is more than you can do right now......

Go out and buy one of those 2gallon or so plastic containers of cheese puffs.......invite some friends over to watch a movie...polish off the cheese puffs, clean out the container (DON"T use soap!) and use THAT for a nice tank for your betta ! :D
