...and I don't mean P.H.A.T. This morning all five were swimming next to each other about mid-level in my tank. Tonight, I fed them (I feed every other day) and after feeding I started to watch my fish eat. I noticed that after all the food was gone, one of my Neon's was having a really hard time swimming down. It has a HUGE stomach. It doesn't seem to be tilted, so I'm ruling out Dropsy, but maybe it's the beginning stages.

I can tell that it wants to swim down, but just keeps floating up. Could that particular Neon have eaten too much? Like I said, it's stomach is huge!

my neons do it all the time. I'm sure it's not great for them, physically, but mine are doing nothing but thriving.

I've lost only one neon, and it was because he disappeared (must have been eaten by something -- btw can a pictus eat a neon?)

Your neon should be fine by morning. I've started feeding less food, but more often, and it seems to help some.

edit: is it a triangular buldge at the bottom of the stomach? That's what happens to mine when they eat flakes.

Yes. Pictus cats do eat anything that will fit in their mouths and neons are no exception unfortunately.

Welcome to AC by the way.:hi:

Ugh. I was REALLY hoping I was done messing around with my tanks. I've hauled about 50 gallons of water around this evening, and had to swap my bettas as well. *runs off to transfer the neons* (thanks for that, btw. Mr. Pictus has a very large mouth.)

Welcome to AC by the way.:hi:

Thank you!

I'll try to get a good picture of this neon. The stomach looks a bit bulgy, and at certain angles the stomach looks like it has mini round shapes. I was thinking maybe pregnant?? I dunno. I'll try to get a picture of it.

did this just happen? I seriously think it's just overeating. I have one neon that seems to get the most food, and he get's lumpy from overeating on a regular basis.

The only other fish that I have that does this is my sole surviving platy fry, and the visual effect seems to diminish as the fish grows.

I'm not trying to diminish your concern for your fish. I just wanted to ease your mind that it could be something fairly harmless (still wouldn't suggest letting them do it, though!)

Edit: yeah, I already caught my neons. Got 'em while they were sleepy!

As for over eating, I only feed them every other day, and the food I put in is definitely less than 3 minutes worth of feeding for about 11 or 12 fish. If it over ate then that sucker just decided to do it today.

As for happening all of the sudden, yes, just about a couple hours ago. I hope it is just over-eating. I'm tired of my Neon's getting sick.

Given that I've had my piggy little neons for a good while now and see this exact same situation on a regular basis, I'd definately suggest just waiting to check the fish in the morning.

Research all you want (you could easily prove me wrong,) but remember to be careful with any chemicals or meds.

I hope your little neon is okay!
