my new 10 gallon set up finally done ^^

the pleco will do "ok" just finding stuff on the bottom but you should really get him some algae disks. Long ago, the thought was that they were a cleanup fish only.... but they are a fish and all fish have their needs, plecos are a bit specific just as any other fish. You can offer them veggies to, boiled and anchored to the bottom overnight and removed in the morning to make sure they don't harm the parameters of the water. And there is no pleco that will do fine long term in a 10 gallon tank unfortunately, so maybe you should start thinking about what size tank you want next ;)

(ditto on the Emg's post too)

yea i know for certain that the angel fish and pleco are going to outgrow my tank for sure. i'll probably pick up a 30 gallon or something in the summer. is that big enough? or bigger?

it'll be big enough for the Angel but not the pleco. At full size, the least size tank should be a 75 gallon. I had one, tried keeping him in a 55 gallon and it was just too tight for him. I gave him to a friend with a 75 gallon and he is doing well so far in it. Keep in mind that common pleco's usually top off at about 18" - 24" and quick.

Don't worry, it'll take years for your pleco to outgrow the 30. I responded to a free 20g tank ad on craigslist. It came with a 7" pleco, 4" angel, 4" silver dollar, and a 2.5" cory. I've since put them in a 29g and given the silver dollar away, but they aren't fast growers.

A coworker of mine gave me an 11" pleco that had been in his 46g tank for nearly 5 years. He got the pleco when it was about 3 inches long.

I have a betta in my 55g with 5 angels and so far no aggression towards each other. As far as pleco growth goes, they do grow pretty quickly if the tank conditions are optimal. You have to beware on waiting till they are too large for the tank to move them, because sometimes they get stunted before they look too large. If I were you, I would get the 30g for the angel and then take the pleco back to LFS and buy one that wont grow too large. There are lots of species that stay fairly small. They do cost more, but they are almost always more colorful.

jodi is right, I would return the pleco to the store and look for one that will stay smaller. Pleco's do grow large and I've said and the growth can be quick if in an optimal environment. As she said, they can stunt quickly without you realizing it before it's too late. Check out the pleco's here Planet Catfish and then decide oon what is fair to you and the new pleco you pick out.

I am here yet again to defend the pleco...

Bhanzo - please return your pleco to the store asap. You do not have an appropriate tank to house a pleco, and you will have your hands full with the angels.

Beatle - Please, DO NOT tell people 30g is enough for a pleco. It is not. Common plecos grow at an astounding rate, but of course you have to feed them.....Apparently most people don't.

My pleco has grown on average 1 inch per month for the 1st year of his life. He is now almost 2, his growth rate has slowed a bit, and he tops out at 16.5 inches, about....It's hard to measure a fish. He outgrew a 35g hex, a 55g regular, and now lives in a 180g.

Most people are not dedicated enough to own a pleco ( tank size, poop, feeding fresh veggies, more poop, oh and did I mention the POOP!)

after reading this, i am goin to return the pleco...however i would like another peaceful algae eater in my tank. any reccomdations? my friend has a chinese algae eater or something..is that good? or maybe cory catfishes? (not sure if these even eat algae) i bought some algae disks for the pleco today too. the angel and betta seem to be doing fine. althouhg sometimes the betta will advance on the angel, but the angel just zips away, and most of the time they will be brushing against each other with no problem. he does get in a little trouble sometimes thouhg, getting stuck in things :( the danios are just zipping around 24/7 which makes me happy. the frogs...not much movement from them still. they didnt eat the bloodworms right away when i fed them a few days ago but the blood worms arnt there, but i think the danios ate them, i saw a few in their mouths. and they are such good hiders!!! took me 30 minutes on time to find one! i will try to feed them again tommorow.

one more question!! i feed the danios and angels flakes, but im not sure how much i should feed them. i think i feed them enough...my family members keep feeding them more later though :( i saw so much betta food on the bottom of the tank, i really need to hide the stuff. okay ill update more later :)
