Today I got 5 Firemouths for my 55 gallon. They are all doing well. I just wanted to know if I made a mistake. Like I might have more than 1 male... Will they fight? And is my tank overstocked? Thanks for your help.

that depends on what else you have in the tank.
your firemouths will get around six inches at two inches per gallon thats a 60 gal tank. so if that is all you have then your in the ballpark. Firemouths are fun and with five you will likely wind up with some mating pairs and they will fight.

Inch per gallon rule is out.....dont listen to it

The only other thing I have in there with them is a common pleco. I also have a 29 gallon with just one 4 inch convict. So when they mate they will fight? What should I do then? I could get a tank divider. Also im not sure if all of them will make it, on the way a couple may die. So if you have any suggestions I would highly appreciate them. Thanks.

And has anybody heard of a firemouth mating with a convict? I think I have read something similar somewhere.

ditch the common, they get massive, I can vouch seeing 4 of mine are 20+ inches. with fish geneology if they are compatable they will mate. I would watch them to see how they react....but with them you should have a bigger tank..

This is the second post by you posing a 2" rule. That is bad advice and you should not be giving that as a guideline. 2" per gallon? So, a 10" Oscar in a 5 gal tank?

It's not quite as bad as that, he said it backwards - He meant 30" of fish, 60 gallons. Still, than means your hypothetical 10" oscar in a 20g tank which isn't a whole lot better  !

55g with five firemouth obviously depends on a lot of unknowns. Will he get a pair? Two pair? Is one or more of the firemouth psychotic? If they're relatively peaceful, he'd be fine. If they pair up, two pair would about do it, and the singleton would be in trouble. One pair with three singletons might work ok. That's the reason I purposely avoid pairs; a little less unknowns.

If you got 5 just wait it out and see which ones if any pair up or show any aggression and if so take the mean ones back. And ditch the common pleco unless you really like it, it will be OK in that 55 for a little while.

Im not sure what to do with the pleco... alot of people say to get a bristlenose. How big does a bristlenose get and how much do they cost?

Bristlenoses are suggested because they dont get very big and still "eat algae" like most people expect plecos to do. They wont get over a few inches and cost between $10-20 around here. There are other plecos that dont get very big, just search for "exotic plecos" and check them out, some of them have different diets and wont really eat the algae in your tank.
