Just got these guys. They chase each other around the tank for about an hour and then they just sit there side by side for an hour and then the process starts all over again. It is very amusing.

Is it too early to tell if they are male or female?

Electric Blue Jack Dempsey. It's a recessive color morph, and most (including my own) tend to be much more passive than regular JDs.

nice dempseys!! :thm:

I've been thinking about getting a pair of these. Would a 55Gal would be sufficient, or a 75Gal? They are sweet looking fish. Where'd you get em?

Right now mine are in a 55. I am waitng until they get a little bigger than i am going to move them to my main 125 gallon that i have set up.

The Regular Jack Dempsey i got at my Local Fish Store. The electric Blue Jack Dempsey I got at thatfishplace.com. It came packaged really well except they put in an ice pack and the water in the bag was about 65 degress when it got to my house. I had to acclimate it for a good hour or so until it got its color back. Once i put him in the tank about 2 hours laters he was fine and swimming all over the place.

Now i just want to know if they are males or females.

Anyone?

from what I have read you should be able to even get them to spawn in a 55gal. You would only want to keep those 2 in there and maybe an algi eater of some kind.

That would be really cool if they would spawn. From what i have read a lot of people say the most EBJD are males. So if my little regulare JD is a female that would be awesome.

thats what I am working on now. My fist batch on eggs had the tails poke out and they moved a bit then all died off. Hoping they were both still to yung. Looking forward to the 2nd spawn.

if you want to get a mating pair. Do what I did. buy about 3 juv dempseys and see what pairs up with your EB. The juvs I bought were all smaller so my EB was the alpha fish.
Then you can remove the other fish later. since your fish are all small you should be fine space wise.
Just a idea. You might have a pair already. fish are cheaper when small.
