Ok. Here goes another $0.02 from me..which will probably be looked at as $0.00 and not wanted but here it is.
PetCo is a corporation, they do not care about the animals as much as they put out. I worked at one (so you've seen the inner workings, I LIVED the inner workings of the store (do you know about the chest freezer in the back "wellness room" where they keep dead animals that die in the store?) and mostly in the aquatics department. I couldn't treat as needed with what was needed. I couldn't move fish to a hospital tank without getting permission, I couldn't put things in quarantine without management approval and to be quite honest the store manger of the store I worked in, would NOT touch the fish, would NOT touch the reptiles would touch only the birds and a few small animals. She wouldn't even get crickets for customers. You could ask her a question about a goldfish and she would say I don't know and get a book off the shelf and LOOK for the answer. Now I must say, I didn't expect her to know EVERYTHING off hand, but things like food, habitat (including temperature etc) I would expect the store manager (who also happens to be the general manager) to know.
I agree, taking them back to the store isn't the best option but when it comes to the possibility of them going to another home where there is the optimal conditions, I'd chance it. That being said. I've got through an aquarium science program in a college, I'm in the process of getting the rest of my certifications to become and animal cruelty officer. I'm not flaming anyone. People ask for input and advice and when its not what they want to hear, they get mad. I don't remember who said it, but they are right. You're taking the life of another creature into your hands. You are responsible for that animal, and in the eyes of the law, properly housing and proper care is REQUIRED!
I'm not bullying or flaming anyone, I'm passing along the knowledge I have that I've paid for through college and certifications. If I don't know or cant prove the answers, I don't respond. Unless it's opinion question which everyone is going to have different views (not necessarily wrong ones.)
What we all as hobbyists need to realize is if we don't do it how it SHOULD be done, how can we expect future hobbyists (children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews etc) to do it right. "Well you didn't do it that way!"
Do as one says, not as one does.
