Hi Everyone... I have been around the Freshwater Block for many years, but I have finally decided to take the plunge into real Aquaria... I.E. Salt... I currently own a 60 gallon FW and today I took advantage of a offer I had from my LFS... I picked up a 65 gallon reef tank for $50.00 and am going to restore it to its previous glory... Check out the pics and please give me your suggestions asto setup as well as all fitration and so forth... Thanks in advance...

Wow...looks a lot like what I started with, complete with trash can-o-rocks:) What direction are you going to go?

I am not too sure... Thats why a am asking all of you your opinions... Please, I am open to all of your suggetions... Give me some insight on how to setup the filration... Also it came with a rio 2500 powerhead and also some rio 180's and 90's... Teach me all, you saltwater guru's!!!!
 
you have to cycle it first, just like FW. it looks smaller than 65 gallons though. so far everything looks good. what are you panning on putting init once cycle is over?
 
Was thinking about my snowflake that is currently in my FW... He is still small so I am assumming I can acclimate him to the salt, seeing how he is a SW eel... Honestly,I believe it is a 56.1 gallon with a 4 gallon overflow... Does this sound right... 36 x 24 x 15... 18 with the overflow... Thanks for the tip on the salt...Ha ha... Question, what can I do with the 100lbs or so of coral that came with it... Basically, the tank was drained and sat in a storage room of the LFS for about 6 months...Nothing was added to the tank at all, no chemicals etc. What is the best way to clean it? Toothbrush, etc. Can I use it as base rock...Will it seed... Also what am I going to need as filtration... I am currently running a brand new fluval in my 60 gallon african tank...Should I buy like a magnum 350 for the fresh then run the fluval in the SW...
 
there is more than one way to go about running a SW tank. I would just use the rock you have. Use a toothbrush if you want, just make sure to rinse it well with clean water. filtration is also a matter of taste, some don't even have any. I use refugium and i throw carbon or something like that right in it, not including chaeto and mangrove. others don't use any kind of chemical filtration. bio-balls are good for cycling a tank, but later on, once the tank is established, you won't need them. I would just use that hang on sump you have in the back really. you don't really need anything, but to look into cycling on this forum to see which way you want to go about it. oh, and sand if you like the look of it, but you can go bare bottom too. you'll need "Prime" if you are going to use tap water. to shorten a cycle to 14 days, get Bio-Spira for SW. you'll need a cover if you are going to keep an eel, mine just got out the tank and dried up. :( set it all up and take pics please. what are you going to use as a stand?
