My New Shellies...with pics

Well Moo....guess what I did today......lol.....

I went right out and bought a trio of multis......what a nut ! I also picked up another female brevis. I divided up the 10 gallon for now and will be on the lookout for a deal on a 15 so that they can each have thier own tank. Guess the multis will go in the 15 and the brevis in the 10 from what you've said about them. The multis sound like they'll be a whole lot of fun to watch and raise...looking forward to it. I think one of the females may be gravid, though not sure. Their tank will take up residence below my 20long blue ram planted tank.

They are definitely bolder and more active than the Brevis. The three of them wasted no time getting out and exploring thier new home, while the new female brevis I picked up quickly ran to the open shell after she first checked out the couple taking up residence in the other. Though the male is definitly showing a bit more activity in his interest in the new girl...they still hang right by the shells. I don't think any of the multis have been in a shell yet, except for the male quickly checking out the opening of one of them.

Anyway...pics of the new guy...haven't been able to get a good one of the females yet as they run behind the sponge filter/plant as soon as I show the camera.

The multis are on the left side of the tank..I gave them a bit more room. Thanks for all the interest and info Moo ! It is fun to share with a fello enthusiast ! You're my new fave....lol....

I went to that last site you linked to....check out these pics !!! Those stappersi are Gorgeous !! http://www.shelldwellers.com/index.php?board=3;action=display;threadid=812

I also saw some lamprologus Cyngus at the LFS I got these from..I wasn't sure if they were a shell dwelling species or just how big they got, but they sure were pretty....I saw some Lamp. signatus at that site you linked, but they didn't have a pic, so I'm not sure if they are the same thing or not and the lfs just had the name spelled wrong...if not sure, best not to purchase I have learned...lol...

I also recently set-up a 6 gallon Brevis tank. Ive had them for about a month now. Initially I had a male and 2 females.....the Male was loving one and hating the other...constantly harassing her and forcing her to just hang out in the top right corner. I thought that eventually he would let her chill out but after 2 weeks of that I decided to take her back. I have read that Brevis are monogomas and that a Harem is not the best idea for this particular species unless of course there is enough room. For me 6 gallons was not enough and im just keeping the pair in there now.....but you should be alright with 10 gallons.

And yes they are extremley skittish fish. Mine are becoming more comfortable...eating is not a problem for them now. I would suggest that after you feed them, keep a good distance from the tank so they will come out to eat. Mine still dart into their shells when I get too close, but if im a few feet away they will come out. That being said I think they are facinating to watch....hope they will breed soon.

Oh and by the way...your pictures are not showing up for me either

Hmm...that's really strange about the pics.......I'll have to make some changes and see if that helps.....

And thanks for the info on the Brevis........hhmm......monogomous huh...dang..lol...I'll have to wait and see what happens with them. Hopefully I can find a reasonably priced 15 and get those multis moved into it before too long.

yeah they show up for me now...nice looking tank!

Awesome EMG. I know you'll love em. Now you have to become a shell scrounger. Any time I'm in a LFS i keep a lookout for empty snail shells. I get some weird looks form employees when I ask if I can have the empty shell, but they usually give it too me. I prefer the snail shells because they're lighter and the multis can move them around. The brevis really only need one shell each, but the multis like to pull a bunch of shells together and form a pit, like they would have back in the lake.

Sorry about the mis-information on brevis. Mine showed no aggresion, but they were not quite sexually mature and there were a bunch of them, so any agresion that did occur was probably spread out.

Lol about scrounging for shells...no kidding...I checked out what they were charging for some of them.....from 2$ to over 3$ each depending on size and attractiveness !! No Way !

I did buy a package of 3 for 3$ and change....because I needed a few extra to make sure I had enough to start with....I happen to have a few that my inlaws gave to the kids...(they live right on Daytona Beach...ocean side !)...which were the right size. I will have to scrounge some of those snail shells like you mentioned. The ones I have are definitely a bit heavy and difficult for them to scoot around.

The male multi seems to have picked one of the females as his favorite. She picked out a shell already, though she doesn't hover in it like the brevis do...in fact, I don't think she's been all the way in yet...at least while I'm hanging around. The other female stays pretty much out of site...I did see the male chasing her a bit.

Anyway....fun fish ! Can't wait to get a hold of a 15 now ! :D

EMG That is totally awesome! And thanks Moo and others for the info! I have a trio of bevis and a trio of speciosous and a trio of mutis coming in tomorrow. I will divde my 30 gallon and I have a five to put one trio in. Of course the odd woman out will have to be moved as soon as I figure out which one sheis..

Best of luck EMG!
