My New Tank: Plants decomposing/melting

We both may have it wrong Aquabum,LOL
By the sound of that it seems that that plant could be a "dorimalia cordata" in Japanese "dorimaria coruda-ta", I am not familiar with madara.
And the red one seems to be "alternanthera reineckii CARDINALIS" or in Japanese "aruterunanntera ka-jinarisu". Every where you go in Japan you get people naming fish and plants differently.

As you know different areas have a different lingo, and to give you an example, I asked two different fish shops ,one from my area and the other from a place about 6 hours drive from where I live, I asked them for the same fish but when they turned up on my doorstep there were two completly different fish. What I am trying to say is if at all possible get the scientific name for the fish/plants( scientific name in Japanese is"gakumei"), but even then you will get shops that do not have a clue as to what the scientific name is.

Anyway, those plants will need more light. How long have you had the tank set up for? I do suggest that you dose with "brighty K" from the start. There is also another good brand called "plant food" ,it is cheap and has everything a Co2 injected tank needs. I dose with this and I rarely have any problems with algae. Either way you should be dosing with something.

My tank is 10 days old. I'll get Bright K Friday night and start dosing it. It is ok to dose it with Step 1 at the same time right?

Sorry for the problem with the plant name and thanks for all the suggestions. Really nice finding this forum. Having someone from Japan who can help me with the japanese names is a big plus. :) I hope i can help you guys someday when i get better with managing planted tanks.

By the way, ashdavid, you already have a copy of ADA world 2005? They are giving them free in my LFS.

Step one and brighty K are two different things, and yes it is ok to dose with both at the same time. Once your tank gets to about six months old you can then start to use step two.

If you need any help with fish names or plant names give me a yell. Also if you need some rare fish or info on rare fish, I know a few importers and good fish shops here in Japan who are in the know. BTW where are you located?(general area would be fine)

And Yes I have the new ADA cataloge.

Cool, though i wont be looking for rare stuffs just yet but I'll contact you if ever :)

I'm in Tokyo, 1 hour from metro tokyo though.

Regarding my light im using a Tetra Light L with 15W,

squall_japan--can't help you, but just want to say your tank is gorgeous. Thanks for posting pics, It's great to see what amazing things some people can do with their aquariums. Inspirational!

Thanks Ms.Bubbles! though i still have so much to learn.

Aquarium update:
I tried to salvage the 2 plants. I removed the rotten parts and replanted them. I moved the Dormalia to the back. The lotus is now really huge. I didn't know it would grow huge. Planning to replace it with another red slow-growing plant. I started dosing it with Brighty K and Step 1 Brighty too.

If you get the Aqua System's AXY ION 27W, you will have the choice to raise your watts per gallon to just over 4w/g by leaving the original light on the tank, or just use the Aqua System's AXY ION 27W by itself and have about 3w/g. Either way I think the AXY ION 27W(if you have the money) is the best way to go, b/c you may need the 4w/g in the long run.

If you can fit them over the tank, than I will say that what you have done is just as good, now you will have 4w/g ,which will really help those plants grow.
That was probably the cheaper way which is good as well. Btw I live south of Osaka. Cheers

Just want to thank everyone for your help.

After 5 weeks...

The ADA fertilizer plus the 41W is working fine. The 2 plants that almost died is now healthy and growing really fast. I also finished cycling after a month. I introduced 3 boraras brigittae and some Cherry Red Shrimps. I was planning to add the 5 glowlights from my smaller tank but decided on buying 6 green neon tetras and 3 more boraras brigittae; and keep the smaller tank alive.

Will my tank be able to handle 6 green neons + 6 boraras brigittae + handfuls of shrimps? Impossible to add the 5 glowlight tetra right?

Thanks for all the help people
