I keep my Oscars in an un-planted tank. Oscars seem to have their own idea when it comes to the tank decoration. They generally don't like gravel and plants annoy them. Heaters and filter tubes aren't much better. I guess they don't like things sneaking up on them.
In my 150 gallon tank, I do not use gravel at all. It's a lot easier to keep the bottom of the tank clean without the gravel. I like the look of gravel and plants, however, considering the amount of time it would take to maintain that look, I concede to the Oscars on how the they want their tank arranged.
