my planted tank

if your hood has incandescent lights, you can pick up compact flourescents from walmart for really cheap with incandescent ends. o man. my java moss has recently put up spore pods!

I have had some java moss randomly die off on me as well. I have noticed that when I move java moss from above the waterline to a submerged location, it often dies back(sometimes quite a bit) or simply "sits" for up to a few weeks before it starts growing again. I think it's like "crypt melt," something that often happens to the plant naturally and isn't really a big deal. People just think the plant is dying and toss it out(something of which I am guilty of!)...

This is what I've noticed as well. Java does well in varied light conditions from being in a bucket with almost no light to being right under the hood with intense light. The key is to never keep it out of water for very long. When working with Java on driftwood or rocks be sure to mist or dunk it in water often. If ya keep it out of water for too long it will die back a bit and brown up or die completely depending on how long you had it out for.
