My parents' cats are the same way, major matting. I try to brush them when I can, because they rarely do. Im sure daily brushing would help... Good luck!

I agree with the stripping a friend of mine has a wire haired terrier and she does this.
But if nothing else helps call the breeder. She bred the dog, ask her what's up with his coat. Maybe he's got a little softer coat, maybe she has others like that and knows how to deal with it, can't hurt. He's adorable!
