Wellington Oh,
Well here it go's I bought 4 blue rams last monday, quarantined them until friday and added them to my 55 Gal. Water params were perfect when they were added. They looked fine in there no problems. I had to Leave for out of town sunday for work. Talked to girlfriend all week said they looked good. I got home at 11pm thursday night. Girlfriend said she just got home and all 4 rams were dead at the bottom. I then began looking around and 3 of my angels were missing i found one dead at the top of the tank but cant find the others. Checked water ph 7.0 - 6.8 ammonia 0 nitrite 0 Nitrate 20 - 40 ppm. I know my nitrate levels are slightly high but thats because its time to do my weekly water change/cleaning which i am doing now. All the rest of my fish are acting normal. If its disease i do not see any symptoms with the fish that are alive in the tank. I wish i could have been home to watch them all week

55 Gal
4 Blue Rams - dead
6 Angels - 1 Dead 2 MIA 3 Alive
2 Pictus - Alive
1 Pleco - Alive
1 Red Tail Shark - Alive
1 African Butterfly - Alive

My ram also looked completely healthy when I finally put him into the aquarium. Next thing, six out of seven tetras died. Bacterial infections sometimes go unnoticed, even in quarantine.

That sucks. what really pisses me off is that my angels were looking really good and healthy. But the 3 bigger ones survived, I found the other two angels while cleaning the tank. I am gonna wait a few weeks and make sure i dont lose any more fish but after it looks all clear Could i add 3 more angels to the ones already in there or would they get picked on ?

In my opinion, quarantine should be much longer. I'm talking about a month.

Also, at what temperature did you keep your Rams? I keep mine at at least 82F (in a community tank) and I prefer to keep them at 86F to 88F in a species tank. "Normal" community tank temperatures are too low for them.

Also you list your nitrates at 20-40 ppm. I also think that's high for Rams.

I hope that helps.

rams are VERY sensitive little fish. they need warmer water as sam suggested, they need a goodly and varied supply of live foods in their diet, they don't like 'busy' tanks, they don't like a LOT of light, they appreciate a heavily planted tank and they are very sensitive to water quality. a quarantine period of a month wouldn't be too long ... a week serves no purpose at all.
