My rams have spawned! ~56k folks BEWARE PHOTOS

I have had a lot of Rams at different times and just saw some at the wholesaler yesterday. Yours look like nice Microgeophagus ramirezi to me. Not hybrids. I don't even think they would mate as there is talk about not having them in the same genus as they are so different from each other.

A few things.

Those rams are hybrids. blue/german x bolivian by the looks of it.

I thought most german rams had the black dot on the side of them? At least mine do. What are Carolina rams?

Which wholesaler? If you are in Buffalo, I bet I know which store you went to...The Fish Place? That store is awesome :)

As for german rams, I am just about positve I have a pair that want to breed. The male actually chases discus away from the spot that they are cleaning. He is really beautiful, they are the long fin variety, and his fins are about an inch long. Anyhow, do rams require soft water for there eggs, or will they reproduce in normal, moderately hard tap water with a pH of 7.8?

I dunno what Carolina blue rams are, that's just what the guy that was selling them at the auction called them. I think he's referring to the light blue color in the fish... as in UNC Tarheels blue... but that's just a guess.

Yes & Yes. I was at my friends place downstairs in the wholesale where he has at least 1000 tanks and the Ram eggs will not hatch if the water is not very, yes very soft. The pH can be aorund 7 but the water has to be soft.

I also want to try and breed my new rams. Most likely I'm going to set up a 10g pretty soon and set it up for them. Anyways as for you disappearing eggs the parents may have even eaten them for cichlids rams make horrible parents i've heard of them eating their eggs a few times before.

i am not an expert on them but i just recently picked two rams at the lfs. i wanted to know as much as possible on how to get them to breed so i asked many questions. They like a higher temp arround 80-84 i read on many web sites that where they live in the wild temp arround 90. also a lower ph arround 6-7 and a lower hardness level. a guy at the fish store told me he can almost get them to breed every time by increasing the temp to 85-86 and change of water with a low ph arround 6. he said that works real good. i dont know everything but just giving the info that i have gotten.
