I'd always wanted to have some kind of fish that had a beautifully black body, like inky black, with some brilliantly coloured fins that really stood out. These guys hit the mark.
WeedCali, I actually didn't use the internet when I was breeding these guys. I have an old book, like really old, called "All About Tropical Fish", by Derek McInerny. That's the name of it, I'm pretty sure. I read the segment on liverbearers repeatedly - amazingly, I had a harder time breeding liverbearers than I did egg layers!
Otherwise, I already had an idea on what I wanted, & I knew a bit about genetics from breeding Bettas, so I just selected the best stock I could find. I usually removed the throw backs from the hyrbids, but I did allow 2 multi-coloured males to stay in the mix because their fins were fantastic - like a scarf or a veil or something. You can see them in the photos, I think.
I did look at some sites afterwards though, I might still have a few links stashed away in the archives. I'll make another post later with some.
Whilst I am going to start this line up again, I'm going to make an attempt at a second strain. First, I need to find the right stock for it
