My snail is doing weird things..

oh okay. Ill put the filter in tonight then. Do you think he could get sick from that? I cant figure out what these little white beads are. I haven't changed his diet or anything.

You can kinda see the film and the little white dots are the beads.

put the filter back on, but before you do, scoop out all the 'beads', do a fair size water change (i'd probably do about 40 to 50%) and make sure to use a good water conditioner. if you use water conditioner, like prime or aquaplus, you can use tapwater and you don't need to use bottled water or spring water.

your snail come to hang out at the top of the water line because your water quality is not good and oxygen levels in the water are low. many members on here, including myself, would recommend you get an API liquid test kit so you can test for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate and be able to monitor your water quality.

what are you feeding the snail?

In general filtration is a great thing. It is not required, I don't use them but not having a filter takes a lot more thought and consideration than one might think. I do use a small pump to break the surface of the water and keep it moving. Stagnant water is not a good thing.

Having run both with and without a filter my advice it to always run a filter. It just isn't my choice. If you decide that a filter is not what you want I would suggest that you read "The Ecology of the Planted Aquarium". If thinking about your tank like the author does appeals to you then perhaps you will choose to run with no filter.

Lettuce mostly. Sometimes I'll give him an algae tablet or celery though.

Agree with this. That looks like mold growing on the film at the surface. Your snail needs filtration, oxygen, and dechlorinated tap water.

Well, that's a real bummer. I agree with everyone that you should have a filter and be able to test your water quality to make sure this doesn't happen again. It's really great that you came to see how you could fix the situation for him when you noticed something odd :)
