Sometimes I'll give him an algae tablet or celery though.put the filter back on, but before you do, scoop out all the 'beads', do a fair size water change (i'd probably do about 40 to 50%) and make sure to use a good water conditioner. if you use water conditioner, like prime or aquaplus, you can use tapwater and you don't need to use bottled water or spring water.
your snail come to hang out at the top of the water line because your water quality is not good and oxygen levels in the water are low. many members on here, including myself, would recommend you get an API liquid test kit so you can test for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate and be able to monitor your water quality.
