My snail jello didn't turn out so well

I got my first batch of brigs. Wanting to be a good snail mommy I followed the recipe in the sticky and made up some snail jello. I think I did something wrong though. When I took my jello outta the fridge it is clearly seperated in two layers with the baby food mostly on the bottom layer. It also is rather soft. I took a scoop full and put some in my tank. Some off it broke off and made my water a little cloudy. After about an hour, it kinda melted into my gravel. My fish, pleco, cories and the few snails that got to it in time, did a good job of cleaning it up. I am wondering how the jello normally behaves in your tank? Will it cause any water quality issues with me? What did I do wrong in my prep?

Hmmm..Did you stir it well? The snail jello needs to have a more homogenous gelatin mass to hold everything together. It must be too runny that it broke off. I'd add more gelatin there. Glad though your pets cleaned them up. Start with only an inch to 1.5 inch cube to be safe as leftovers can foul up water quickly if they missed some chunks.

did you use a small or large jar of baby food?

I tried to double the recipe, so that may have been my problem right there. I used two of the stage one (very small) baby food jars.

you do have to make sure there is enough gelatin to bond everything together, and mix, mix, mix it well!

i found that by putting more calcium supplement than the recipe called for helped to bind things together better. i also ground up some algae wafers and shrimp pellets and added those the same time as my ground up calcium. my snello ended up feeling kinda like latex rubber, lol, but the shellkids and finkids both love it! a half icecube size chunk is nom nom nommed in no time!

note: you can freeze the ice cube pieces up to one month, according to the recipe i used, and i just drop the frozen cubes right into the tank. snellocicles! lol.
